Movie Review: Lush, romantic, painterly feel for place and time.
Summary: 4 Stars
Despite all criticisms to the contrary, this is a superb first directorial effort for Barbra Streisand. There are lapses, here and there, and the first quarter of the movie is a bit languid, but as soon as Anshel and Avigdor begin their journey, the wit and romanticism that has always been at the heart of the best Streisand performances breaks through. All the actors are wonderful, down the small roles, and Streisand's obvious care is apparent. Her direction is strong and full of great feeling, and the look and "feel" of the movie oddly reminiscent of Dutch painting. A great treat for Streisand fans, and a good, if not great film on its own. When the divisive Streisand camps are all gone, this movie musical will stand the test of time.
