VHS Movie Reviews of Werewolf of London [VHS]

Movie Review: Not as good as the Wolf Man
Summary: 4 Stars

Werewolf of London is one hour and fifteen minuets long and was released on May 13, 1935. Werewolf of London is nothing like the Wolf Man. First of all this Werewolf has a conscience and knows what he is doing, whereas the Wolf Man just goes out and kills and does not remember a thing the next day. Also the make-up is more tone down where you see more facial features and less wolf features. This is because Henry Hull (the star of the movie) refused to sit down for long hours to apply make-up. Jack Pierce wanted to do something more similar to that of the Wolf Man movie. Others that are different; you need the blossom from the mariphasa plant to temporarily prevent the transformation into a werewolf, no silver bullet is required to kill the werewolf and you don't hear that famous phrase throughout the movie:

Even a man who is pure in heart
and says his prayers by night
may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms
and the autumn moon is bright.

The story begins in Tibet where Dr. Wilfred Glendon and a friend are looking for the rare mariphasa plant, which only blooms at moonlight. Dr. Glendon finds the plant, but is attack by a werewolf. The werewolf bites Dr. Glendon in the arm during the struggle. Back home, with the plant in his possession, he begins to study the mariphasa plant. One night while studying the mariphasa plant under a moon lamp, his hand begins to change. Dr. Glendon administers some of the serum from the plant and the hand is restored. It is later found out that it is only a temporary cure as told by Dr. Yogami (Warner Oland). Dr. Yogami is also the other werewolf that attacked him in Tibet. Dr. Glendon tries to lock himself away so he cannot kill anyone until the blossom has re-grown. Dr. Glendon cannot control his transformation and begins killing. The story ends with Dr. Glendon killing Dr. Yogami because he has stolen the treatment and brought this curse on him. Dr. Glendon is killed by Sir Thomas Forsythe because the werewolf was attacking Lisa, Dr. Glendon's wife. In the end we see the werewolf transform back into Dr. Wilfred Glendon. During the transformation, he starts looking like a grown up Eddie Munster. Also Dr. Wilfred Glendon is killed with a regular bullet and not a silver one. This movie gets a B- for the water down werewolf design.

Summary of Werewolf of London [VHS]

Universal's first werewolf film falls in the shadow of the 1941 hit The Wolf Man. You might say it's a different animal, as this version carries none of the now-familiar trappings of the wolf-man legend: no wolfsbane, no silver bullets, no gypsy curse. Dr. Wilfrid Glendon (Henry Hull) is a London botanist whose search for a rare flower takes him to a "cursed" valley in Tibet where he's mauled in the moonlight by a wolflike creature. Back in London he meets the mysterious Dr. Yogami (a marvelously melancholy performance by Warner Oland), who explains they met once before "in Tibet... in the dark" before asking for a flower from his botanical find, the only antidote for his curse. Glendon scoffs at his stories of werewolves--until he transforms into a hirsute killer under the effect of the full moon. Although leaner and edgier than the famous 1941 Lon Chaney classic, The Werewolf of London stumbles with the corny Scotland Yard investigation of the murder spree and gets sidetracked in the bizarre bickering of two old drunken cronies. But it takes flight in wonderfully imaginative and eerie scenes and striking action sequences, while a Jekyll-and-Hyde dynamic turns a jealous squabble between Glendon and his young wife Lisa (Valerie Hobson) into the tragic twist of the curse: "The werewolf instinctively kills the thing it loves best." --Sean Axmaker
