VHS Movie Reviews of Treasure Island (1990) [VHS]

Movie Review: The finest version ever, say I
Summary: 5 Stars

Rich in texture, atmosphere, music (by The Chieftans!), costumes, language and performance, this TV film of the ultimate pirate saga is THE definitive version.

While Disney's classic holds strong sentimental value and fine photography, this holds stridently to the original source. It is violent, period appropriate and well paced.

Filled with superbly staged action, and Charleton Heston's brilliant performance as Long John Silver, this version of TREASURE ISLAND demands a permanent place on anyone's film library.

Perfect! But get this on DVD now!

Movie Review: Best movie ever!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I know this for sure, no movie will ever beat this, it rises, invincible, far above any lord of the rings, star wars, clockwork orange or whatever you're watching. this is THE movie & the only thing, that will ever stand beside it, in wonder & magnificence, is the music... it can sweep anyone away (it is celtic-like, & it leaves the soundtrack of 'last of the mohicans' far far far behind)

Movie Review: Great version!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you loved the book you will certainly love this movie! It is a great adaptation! I loved every minute of it! Carlton Heston and a young Christian Bale are great!!! I only wish this version was available on DVD!!!!!!

Movie Review: An Instant Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

While Disney set the standard for Treasure Island by which all other versions are judged, TNT's take on the classic R.L. Stevenson tale is by far the best. Everything from the locations, action sequences, acting, pacing, and cinematography are first rate. Christian Bale plays a sturdy Jim Hawkins. You actually believe he can pull of some of the adventures that he does in the film. If Robert Newton will forever be the ideal of Long John Silver, Charlton Heston comes a close second playing the role with both physical power and deviousness....this guy is always calculating the odds. The supporting characters are first rate....how can you go wrong with Oliver Reed as Billy Bones, Christopher Lee as Blind Pew, Julian Glover as the doctor and Peter Postlethwaite as George Merry? For a TV movie this one sure has a lot of star power! You can also tell that no one mailed in their performances.....everyone seems to be having a grand old time.

The film score by the Chieftains turns the movie from great to transcendent (if you like boyhood adventures) and some of the set shots are like something from a Wyeth painting. I'm not a big advocate of buying up movies for the home, but this is one to buy and keep....it really is that good.

Movie Review: A rare classic!
Summary: 5 Stars

THE pirate enthusiast's movie. You will not believe that this was made for TV in 1989-90. WHY HASN'T ANYONE RELEASED THE FULL VERSION ON DVD YET, THERE ARE MANY OF US WILLING TO PAY BIG $$$ FOR IT!!!
