Movie Review: One of the greatest stages in history
Summary: 5 Stars
The tour is masterfully called by Liggett and Sherwen, as always. The production value, like all of the World Cycling Productions DVD's is wonderful, as always. However, this TdF is amazing, and will set itself apart for stages 16 and 17 forever.
If you do or don't believe Landis is guilty (his book is also excellent: Positively False), it doesn't matter in watching this. From the very beginning in 2006, the biggest of the big names are gone from the tour before it ever starts: 2006 Winner of the Giro (about a month before), Ivan Basso, and of course, perennial #2 Jan Ullrich, not to mention the entire Astana team. (13 riders in all)
It was a strange tour from the outset, but all the usual excitement in bunch sprints and mountain stages. Stay tuned, when the discs roll around to Stage 16 to La Toussuire, and stage 17 to Morzine.... well, lets just say you won't probably see anything like that, ever again. Worth the price of admission.
as a final thought, the 12 hour DVD has much more mountain footage, which is just gorgeous and exciting, but also some commentary and pieces you will not get in the 4 hour version. I have watched both, and the 12 hour version is worth the time and the money for the upgrade.

The controversy and aftershocks stemming from one of the most dramatic and exciting Tours in decades continue at a fever pitch. In spite of being found guilty, Landis continues to aggressively deny any wrongdoing. The controversy will continue for years, but what is not debatable if the fact that the 2006 Tour de France was suffused with dramatic twists and turns, stuffed with excitement and surprises, and proved to be a spellbinding action thriller from start to finish!
This was a race of exceptional performances from scores of riders not prominent in pre-race prognostications. The race produced expected showings from the specialists, all of it captured in our historic DVD. Robbie McEwen uses his incredible timing and acceleration to sprint to another green jersey. Michael Rasmussen wins his second consecutive KOM title with a courageous points-packed day in the Alps and Damien Cunego comes closer to fulfilling his vast potential and is named best young rider. Thor Hushovd pulls off the rare feat of victory on the first and last days of the race. It seems that each day produced another great winner, and it s all captured on this spectacular DVD, including Landis's breakaway in stage 17.
The drama of the 2006 Tour never flags from beginning to end in this remarkable DVD... The race itself will undoubtedly go down as a notable chapter in the history of cycling s most legendary event.
