Movie Review: Standing Firm - Standing Alone
Summary: 5 Stars

This German (Austrian made?) movie with its English subtitles is difficult to watch and comprehend regarding the particulars of certain selected ongoing incidents. The overall theme is clear regarding the resistance of these select few against the Nazis, but the script is somewhat disjointed and awkward. It is, for Americans, a true "foreign film", and as such it is not a smooth or slick modern Hollywood production. This is a film for deep thought and reflection, not for shallow entertainment. The known historical element of the Christian faith of at least some of those involved was not well-developed, and seems almost an afterthought. Nevertheless, in its own right it is a classic, and it recounts happenings that we would do well to reflect deeply on as we ourselves begin to embrace totalitarian government.

This movie is becoming scarce, and accordingly it could someday have some value as a collector's item...as a frightening glimpse of the past and perhaps of our own future.

Regarding ordering--some confusion here. I took the cheapest route and ordered a copy from a third party supplier that had only one on hand. Other suppliers had copies going for as much as $100+. I obviously expected a VHS tape, since that is how it was listed. Instead, I received a DVD copy, with an apparent legitimate jacket--but one that showed a different view than that shown on the Amazon site. The DVD itself had only black lettering imprinted on it with the title: "The White Rose". The version that I received is the one starring Lena Stolze, and in reading some of the other reviews it also is the same storyline.

Summary of The White Rose [VHS]

The beautiful Lena Stolze stars in this acclaimed feature based on the true story of five German students and their professor who formed a secret society dedicated to protesting the Nazi regime. Known collectively as the "White Rose", the Munich-based group distributed anti-Hitler literature in a resistance effort which cost them their lives. Initially, the German government refused to allow the film to be shown abroad due to an epilogue which pointedly observed that the legal judgment condemning the White Rose society had never been rescinded. Ultimately, the political controversy surrounding Verhoeven's film directly caused the German government to officially invalidate the Nazi "People's Court" system that sentenced the group to death.
