Movie Review: Two Terrific Shorts, "Punch Drunk" & "A Plumbing We Will Go
Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my favorite tapes. I own about twenty different 3 Stooges tapes. I don't much care for "Violent is the Word for Curly." I like the explosion at the beginning of the tape, when the 3 Stooges are gas attendants. After that, at the girl's school, I don't find it that funny. I admit, watching the stooges sing is weird yet compelling.
But "Punch Drunk" is in my opinion one of their best. As another reviewer pointed out, all three stooges are well defined in their roles. Larry is unusually well utilized, his character is competent if bumbling and slightly pompous. More than usual, all the stooges don't have to strain too much for laughs: its within their roles. I've even shown this short to people who are not stooges fans, and afterwards they are one step closer to being a knucklehead.
"A Plumbing We Will Go," on the other hand, is more of a traditional 3 stooges film, but the gags are unusually well paced and the stooges are extremely (yet utterly blithely) destructive to the house where they are mistakingly employed. Its a classic prototypical stooges flick. The only thing that mars it, in my opinion, is its use of racist humor regarding a highly suggestible and superstitious African-American cook. I know, its par for the course at the time, but after watching it some many times I can't help wincing and fast-forwarding through that part.
Anyway, a great stooges compilation.
Movie Review: One of the best tapes.

VIOLENT IS THE WORD FOR CURLY, PUNCH DRUNKS, & A-PLUMBING WE WILL GO are all very funny shorts, but the best one is A-PLUMBING WE WILL GO.VIOLENT IS THE WORD FOR CURLY (1938)-A pretty good short. The gas station scenes, the "Swingin' the Alphabet" song, and the basketball game were all funny scenes. But the rest of the film is rather silly more than funny. B
PUNCH DRUNKS (1934)- The second Three Stooges short, and still not that great. It's at least better than WOMAN HATERS. This should be the first short because the Stooges meet and come together. The whole film still isn't that funny. C-
A-PLUMBING WE WILL GO (1940)- Now this is a classic. The Stooges are funny and so is supporting actor, Dudley Dickerson. The Stooges are mistaken for plumbers set to fix a leak at a society mansion. This short was remade twice as VAGABOND LOAFERS and SCHEMING SCHEMERS, both with Shemp. Curly's prison of pipes is funny, even though Shemp does it better. But this is still a great short. My favorite short with Shemp. A+
Overall, a decent tape.
Movie Review: VIOLENT IS THE PUNCH DRUNKS WE WILL GO
Summary: 5 Stars
VIOLENT IS THE WORD FOR CURLY (1938) - Features the very memorable "Swingin' the Alphabet" song, which was very enjoyable and charming. One of the boys' most recognized scenes. The rest of the short is pretty good as well. Curly with a pickle in stuck in his mouth is a hoot, and Curly tied to a spit over a roasting fire is a clever sight gag, although Curly actually suffered first-degree burns by the flames in one part and was almost burned alive when Moe, Larry, and the crew members couldn't turn the spit crank because of how heavy Curly was!PUNCH DRUNKS (1934) - A very special short, for several reasons. a) it's the very second Stooge shorts. b) it's the first and only one written by the Stooges themselvs. And c) this is the first and probably best short that defines each Stooge's individual characteristics and importance to the team. This really should have been the first Columbia short and would've made a lot of sense. Chossing the dismal WOMAN HATERS as the first one wasn't a good choice at all.
A PLUMBING WE WILL GO (1940) - A hit classic, and quite possibly the Stooges' best work. Curly's at his best, here, as well, especially his maze-of-pipes scene. A must see for anybody, even non-Stooge fans.
Movie Review: I finally found it!

I have been looking for the "Swingin' the Alphabet" song for years. Really! I taped all of AMC'c stooge marathon and never saw it. I bought the whole video just for this song, which my father used to sing to me and my sibs on long car trips. Now I want to order one for Dad!Movie Review: Okay... but definately not the best

Sorry but I disagree with most of the people who have written reviews. "Violent is the word for Curly" is alright but truthfully I didn't think it was that funny, it includes a song where they sing the ABC's. "Punch Drunks" is about the same in my opinion. "A plumbing we will go" I thought was funnier then the version with shemp, I would say it's the funniest on the tape.
