Movie Review: Two Terrific Shorts, "Punch Drunk" & "A Plumbing We Will Go
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of my favorite tapes. I own about twenty different 3 Stooges tapes.
I don't much care for "Violent is the Word for Curly." I like the explosion at the beginning of the tape, when the 3 Stooges are gas attendants. After that, at the girl's school, I don't find it that funny. I admit, watching the stooges sing is weird yet compelling.
But "Punch Drunk" is in my opinion one of their best. As another reviewer pointed out, all three stooges are well defined in their roles. Larry is unusually well utilized, his character is competent if bumbling and slightly pompous. More than usual, all the stooges don't have to strain too much for laughs: its within their roles. I've even shown this short to people who are not stooges fans, and afterwards they are one step closer to being a knucklehead.
"A Plumbing We Will Go," on the other hand, is more of a traditional 3 stooges film, but the gags are unusually well paced and the stooges are extremely (yet utterly blithely) destructive to the house where they are mistakingly employed. Its a classic prototypical stooges flick. The only thing that mars it, in my opinion, is its use of racist humor regarding a highly suggestible and superstitious African-American cook. I know, its par for the course at the time, but after watching it some many times I can't help wincing and fast-forwarding through that part.
Anyway, a great stooges compilation.
