VHS Movie Reviews of The Thing [VHS]

Movie Review: The Thing is...
Summary: 5 Stars

After almost 30 years, I still enjoy watching "The Thing" more than most modern horror, or sci-fi horror. I think it has held up pretty well over the years. Some people complain about the gore, but Carpenter makes films for his fans and not the academy, and sadly, alot of horror fans measure the quality of the horror in buckets of blood. I do not watch films for the gore, and hate it when that is the yardstick for a films worth, but I can enjoy a movie in spite of the gore as long as it isn't overly gratuitous. When things are getting ripped open by an alien being, there will be blood. The lack of character development is often cited by the critics, but this is often the case in the horror genre as characters are only onscreen so that their bodies can end up littering the landscape. In this film the men are all flawed so that you can't choose sides and don't know who to trust. In my opinion, this creates more tension than having a clear cut protagonist hero, and levels the playing field in this psychological struggle for survival.

Overall, I thing there was a great deal of tension in the film as the characters and audience alike aren't sure who is still human and who might be infected. Each character is offscreen enough that there is no way of knowing for sure, and there are a few red herrings to raise your suspicions. The characters are simultaneously fighting an alien, each other and their paranoia, and the elements of one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth. The atmosphere is dark and claustrophobic with absolute isolation. Throw in some creative creature effects and scary music and you've got yourself a horror movie. I think it is well worth watching compared to some of the horrid dreck that's out there. It's alot better than some of Carpenter's work. (Ghosts of Mars) I wasn't sure if it deserves 5 stars, since conceivably that should indicate it is a flawless masterpiece, but it seems alot of very average movies get 5 stars routinely, so I have to give this a solid 4 1/2 stars.

Movie Review: The Thing is the thing to see.
Summary: 5 Stars

Loved this movie as if it was the first time I've seen it. I can view it over and over again especially on my Blu-Ray player. The extras are even great showing how the movie was made. Great commentaries. Highly recommend to all those who love horror movies.

Movie Review: Iconic
Summary: 5 Stars

No matter how many times I watch this movie, my eyes are still glued to the screen like a mayfly on a truck grill. I have no idea how Carpenter pulled it off but everyTHING in this movie just works... The acting, the pace, tension, suspense, paranoia, Carpenter's single bass note soundtrack... and potentially the most disturbing SFX ever recorded. CGI is officially obsolete after the dog kennel scene. Try not to shoot your dog after you watching. It's twisted... Are you a cardiologist or an EMT? Better not watch the defibrillator scene... and I hope you're not sharing the couch with anyone during the blood test scene... Seriously, find a good therapist b/c this stuff will permanently & irreparably scar your pcyche. Twice.

As for the ending, it's just poetic... iconic, actually. All script writers & directors currently working in the biz should be tied to a chair with their eyelids taped open, Clockwork Orange style, and forced to watch this ending 1000 times and then once again for good measure. NOBODY wants to see another lame "the coast is all clear, surprise the monster isn't dead, roll credits" cliche ending. If this is all your lobotomized, creatively impotent cranium sludge can spit out, please bludgeon yourself with a tire iron. Now go fetch my coffee because you have no business being in the business. THINK about the ending, Hollywood people. It's the last impression your audience will have of your movie...

Luckily, THE THING has an ending so insanely awesome, your lidless, gently smoking eye sockets will still be fixed on the screen long after the credits roll. Then again, this statement holds true for pretty much every scene in the movie. Enjoy, bitches.

Movie Review: The Best Horror Movie Ever Made, Hands Down
Summary: 5 Stars

I won't go into a description of the plot, but I will give you a hint: this is a movie about the isolation of a group of people in the most extreme conditions. It is also about horror.

The Thing is probably the most finely crafted horror movie in existence. No CGI garbage here - what you're seeing is what you're getting. The gore definitely adds to the experience, because John Carpenter knew how to visualize a nightmare.

This movie is worth a rental, but I know that I'll always own a copy.

Movie Review: THICK ON GORE, THIN ON PLOT
Summary: 3 Stars

This movie is merely alright. It's a gorefest, but it isn't as good as the original by half, and could the characters be any more boring? This is nowhere near as suspenseful as Carpenter's real masterpiece, HALLOWEEN, but if you're into staring at roadkill you may love it. That said, there is some good suspense, and the FX work is great.
