VHS Movie Reviews of The Rescuers (A Walt Disney Classic) (The Classics) [VHS]

Movie Review: A childhood favorite
Summary: 4 Stars

When I was a little girl, I loved this movie and its sequel. Between the two of them, I learned to love unusual accents and how to spell the word Rescue. I named my hamster after Ms. Bianka (sp?). Although this film does remind me quite a bit of Green Acres now, I still remember it fondly.

Movie Review: loved across my clan's generations
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently showed a VCD of this movie to my six-year-old nephew. He liked it so much, he insisted we bring it along to a party we were having the next day in another house.

The other kids in the party had already seen this movie. One of them said her parents had bought her a copy too. That wasn't much of a surprise as it's easy to buy Disney VCDs here -- and authentic ones too. But I was surprised when my 38-year-old brother-in-law said, upon glancing at the TV screen, "What's that, 'The Rescuers'?" :D

His wife, my older sis, often recalls watching this in theaters back in the 70s. I saw "The Rescuers Down Under" on VHS in the 80s/90s, unaware that there was a prequel. It was sis who told me that there was such an older movie; it was far better; and its soundtrack included the wonderful "Someone's Waiting For You" song. That tune was very popular where we live, as it was covered by local child singers then. :)

When I bought a "Rescuers" disc for my nephew to bring home, he was so eager to get it quickly so he could pack it in his luggage. :-)

Movie Review: Charming classic...
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember this movie from my childhood. I remember seeing in theaters when it was first released back in 1977 and I remember it being a huge hit. Now I'd like to purchase it on DVD but I kind of hesitate to, because I haven't heard many good things about the quality of this DVD issue, not the film, the DVD.

After seeing some screenshots online I am shocked to find the film deteriorating far beyond it's original brilliance, I remember it being sharp, bright and colorful. After having seen Robin Hood four years before, the animation used in The Rescuers looked so refreshing and lively and above all, well-done. However, it seems that lines have thickened, colors have faded and the entire print has become subject of artifacts and scratches. Shameful. It seems so unfair that up to this day, films that are even less than [...]are getting massive restoration undergoings while other, older movies are left to rot to this kind of state. Disney, is it so much to ask that you should treat all your timeless classics equaly? They all deserve it. Yes, all, even The Black Cauldron, Oliver & Company or One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

Well, that's all I'd like to say for this film. I will not have to think twice about purchasing it as soon as the DVD release is what it trully should be.

Movie Review: Good children's film
Summary: 5 Stars

My 4.5 year old just loves this movie. It was nice to hear Bob Newhart and Ava Gabor's voices as characters in the movie.

Movie Review: Margery Sharp's novels come to life!
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently bought the two Disney films based on Margery Sharp's novels, however, I only kept this one, I got rid of the second one. This film wasn't a real adaptation of any of the books, but it kept real close to the themes and messages of the original books. This film most closely resembles the second in the series "Miss Bianca", being very diamond themed. Madame Medusa, Mr. Snoops and Penny are replacements for the Diamond Dutchess, Mandrake and Patience, while Brutus and Nero the aligators are obviously retouched Torment and Tyrant, the bloodhounds.

The film is gorgeously animated, with beautiful songs and peaceful flight scenes. Beautiful landscapes and very touching moments. The whole scene at the orphanage and the scene in which Penny preys always have me sobbing. The opening is very deep and profound as well. The scene in the cave frightened me, but that's what it was meant to do.

I recommend this film to any Margery Sharp fan! Don't bother with the sequel.
