VHS Movie Reviews of The Little Mermaid (Fully Restored Special Edition) (Disney's Masterpiece)Movie Review: "LITTLE MERMAID" RECALLS DISNEY'S CLASSIC GLORY DAYS & USHERS IN A NEW WAVE OF EXCELLENCE Summary: 4 Stars I wrestled for the longest time over whether to purchase this DVD, and I'm so glad I did! Also, I'm so glad Amazon STILL had this in stock; and shipped it so speedily!
Although the Disney Version adds a typical "Disneyfied Happy Ending" to Hans Christian Anderson's original tragic and bittersweet fairy tale, there is absolutely no denying the emotional sweep of the Broadway calibre score by Alan Menchen and the late Howard Ashman; most noteably "Part Of Your World" and "Under The Sea."
In addition, the voice cast, featuring Jodi Benson, Pat Carroll, and Christopher Daniel Barnes, is superb! The entire production recalls the glory days of Disney Animation, which reached a superb apex with "SLEEPING BEAUTY" 30 Years earlier. Not surprisingly, "Little Mermaid" ushered in a new wave of Disney animated musicals-- and this at a time when Disney's Feature Animation Dept. was banished to a smaller location off the main lot and considered dead but not officially buried.
"Beauty and The Beast" received the "Best Picture" Oscar nomination, but I think "Little Mermaid" is the far superior film. The DVD extras, chronicling "Little Mermaid's" stormy production history, a biography of Hans Christian Anderson and the original fairy tale, and a short animated film of Anderson's heart-breaking "The Little Match Girl" make this one of the very BEST titles in Disney's Platinum Edition 2 Disc Series.
Movie Review: Great Classic Summary: 5 StarsAnother great job by disney restoring this movie. Love the extras on the dvd like the game and the music video.
Movie Review: Good Movie for what it is Summary: 4 StarsLike many I enjoyed this movie as a kid and I still think of it as a good movie. However as an advisory to those who have kids I pass along this advice. This is one of the big animated disney films based on a literary classic that takes liberty with the ending. Disney knows that its primary audience loves the happy ending. It is my feeling that had disney told the actual story of the little mermaid then this film would not have been as popular. When the mermaid becomes human it is a literally painful experience every step that she takes hurst and feels as if she is walking on needles. The mermaid also dies at the end of the book because the one she loves falls for someone else.
Now before any of you get on to me and think I'm bursting peoples enjoyment, I'm not. I enjoy this movie for what it is. Even though the ending is not the correct one I will say that disney does do a good job at keeping the overall story intact. The one thing that disney is going to take into consideration is that if it is going to do more animated movies on literary classics then they need to make sure that the ending is a happy one because that is what its audience on a regular basis expects the studio to deliver.
Movie Review: Daughter LOVES it!! Summary: 5 StarsVery good video! My daughter loves it! It's not just because it's the Little Mermaid, but it is a very well-made video. I will say that it could be a little scary for 3 and under because of the sea witch and stuff. A couple of the scenes are scary but don't last long. However, if that type of thing doesn't bother your child it will be fine.
Movie Review: Little Mermaid Summary: 5 StarsWhat I thought might just ba a kids movie was pretty entertaining, the songs, the humor, and the storyline makes you feel like a kid all over again. Once again Disney movies a great family entertainment'
