VHS Movie Reviews of The Hired Hand [VHS]

Movie Review: The Hired Hand - A Review
Summary: 1 Stars

This film was recently the subject of New York Times review which
praised it to the hilt based upon what appears to have been a theatre viewing in NY. I decided to order a copy through [...]. Unfortunately it was obvious that the copy I received was "bootlegged" and probably was a video of a view. The cover
was written in black and white and was upside down. The video was unwatchable. Apparently a restoration of this film is in the works and will eventually re-appear in theatres and on DVD.
Anyone who wants to see this film should wait for the restoration. The copy now making the rounds is pitiful and a complete [...]. Buyer beware.

Movie Review: great film,poor video
Summary: 1 Stars

The Hired Hand is a great film but the quality of the video was so poor that it would not play correctly in my machine.I look foward to the DVD.

Movie Review: Poor Video
Summary: 1 Stars

This is a great film, it has been one of my favorites for years.
The photography is wonderful, and the sound track is great.
Unfortunately, the copy that was ...of such poor quality, that it was unwatchable.

Movie Review: Always one of my top ten Western Films
Summary: 5 Stars

Peter Fonda's Directorial debut. Companion to The Ox-Bow Incident (1943).

Movie Review: Extraordinary Western with '60s Sensibility
Summary: 5 Stars

The Hired Hand directed by and starring Peter Fonda is a minor masterpiece. This '60s-influenced Western features uncanny poignant performances by Fonda as well as Verna Bloom (still in her Medium Cool period) and Warren Oates. Vilmos Zsigmond's camerawork beautifully captures the dreamlike atmosphere, utilizing scene-on-scene double imagery.

Fonda and Oates set out for California, but Fonda decides to return to his wife (Bloom) and daughter. A painting of many moods, emotions, and atmospheres, and a touching ending.

Definitely superior to "McCabe and Mrs. Miller", and ranks with "Once Upon a Time in the West" as one of the all time great Westerns.
