VHS Movie Reviews of The Deer Hunter [VHS]

Movie Review: I want my three hours back!
Summary: 1 Stars

Product description: THIS RIVETING FILM FOLLOWS A GROUP OF FRIENDS FROM A PENNSYLVANIA STEEL PLANT TO THE LETHAL CAULDRON OF VIETNAM.

Actual description: This long, boring, extremely drawn-out film follows a group of drunkards from a Pennsylvania steel plant to a bar, to a wedding, to a reception, to a drunken argument about boots and sandwiches, to a 5-minute-long hunting scene and finally, when they reach Vietnam, the focus is placed almost entirely upon playing Russian roulette with revolvers, which - as fun as that may sound - was really very unpleasant and tedious to watch. Eventually one of the friends returns home for more actionless "hunting", drinking, and sleeping (literally) with his AWOL friend's girlfriend.

I do not understand how films like this get great reviews and all sorts of awards; I think the film industry is playing some kind of joke on us all. Ever notice how terrible old films in which nothing happens get 4 stars and a place on the Top 100 Movies of the Century list, whereas great movies with intriguing stories, fast action, and real romance almost always get poor ratings? Well, the Deer Hunter is one of those Top 100 types that you'll wish you hadn't wasted your time watching. The wedding/reception scene basically starts at the beginning of the movie when the guys leave work, and it doesn't end until 48 minutes later! It doesn't get any better when they go hunting or when they go to Vietnam - it's just long boring nothingness that seems like it'll never end. This movie had no plot at all; watching it was basically like just following a bunch of drunken blue collar workers around during their regular lives for three hours straight! There were no logical transitions between scenes either; it was like - one minute you'd be watching one thing happening, and all of a sudden it would be something totally different and completely unrelated. Of course, these transitions only happen after a scene had dragged on so long that you're considering turning the movie off anyway. Also, every piece of background music in this movie is absolutely horrendous, unless you enjoy light instrumental music from the 70's and the sound of monks singing. Have fun adjusting the volume between the quiet communication among all of the actors and the monks blasting your eardrums out. I can honestly say that I didn't feel a single emotion throughout this entire movie, other than total irritation that the description on the back of the DVD box had tricked us into watching the movie by making it seem like it would be the exact opposite of what it actually is.

If you value your time, definitely do not watch this movie! I want my three hours back!

Summary of The Deer Hunter [VHS]

Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, The Deer Hunter is simultaneously an audacious directorial conceit and one of the greatest films ever made about friendship and the personal impact of war. Like Apocalypse Now, it's hardly a conventional battle film--the soldier's experience was handled with greater authenticity in Platoon--but its depiction of war on an intimate scale packs a devastatingly dramatic punch. Director Michael Cimino may be manipulating our emotions with masterful skill, but he does it in a way that stirs the soul and pinches our collective nerves with graphic, high-intensity scenes of men under life-threatening duress. Although Russian-roulette gambling games were not a common occurrence during the Vietnam war, they're used here as a metaphor for the futility of the war itself. To the viewer, they become unforgettably intense rites of passage for the best friends--Pennsylvania steelworkers played by Robert De Niro, John Savage, and Oscar winner Christopher Walken--who may survive or perish during their tour through a tropical landscape of hell. Back home, their loved ones must cope with the war's domestic impact, and in doing so they allow The Deer Hunter to achieve a rare combination of epic storytelling and intimate, heart-rending drama. --Jeff Shannon
