VHS Movie Reviews of The Claim [VHS]Movie Review: Far too many missed opportunities Summary: 2 StarsThis film 'left me cold' in several ways. Character development was weak--with so very many opportunities to enrich their roles and relationships. Likewise, numerous storylines never fully developed, resulting in fragmented and disjointed scenes that were somewhere between boring and downright confusing. Some secondary characters were more developed than the apparent primary roles. The final scene(s) of the movie would have been better placed at the beginning of the film. I found the saloon scenes the most developed, where the characters were given rare opportunity to portray emotions, and character relationships were more evident. Brothel sex scenes came across as, "we'll insert sex scenes in here because it's a movie seller." Very, very disappointing overall...
Movie Review: Confusing, boring mess that never goes anywhere Summary: 1 StarsThis is a bloated pompous mess of a movie that looks really good and wants to be good, but cannot be. The editing is mostly to blame. It jumps around from time period to time period without much warning and then there are the events in the movie that make little sense. For example, why does a fully furnished house moved into place by men and horses, not have broken dishes, crockery, paintings on the floor, etc.? Instead everything is perfect when the actors step inside. And why is a train circa 1930's running around in 1900 California? And how on God's green Earth could someone be buried six feet under when there is a good two feet of snow on the ground (anyone who lives in a snowbound area knows this is impossible)? Wes Bentley isn't so much acting as just saying lines. The one thing this movie had in its favor is that none of the actors had straight teeth - and that would be fitting for the era...
Movie Review: The Claim Summary: 5 StarsA local reviewer begged us to see this movie and was she ever correct. We found this movie to be both physically and emotionally shattering. Acting, photography, sound, sets draw the viewer into the lives of the major actors to a shattering level. See it in a theatre for the full impact. Highly recommended.
Movie Review: Inexpressive claim Summary: 1 StarsI'm sorry to say, but it's the most boring movie I've seen so far this year. NOTE: not the WORST, but the MOST BORING. Yes, it has good actors, mostly females: N Kinski and S Polley (who play mother and daughter) and who, as we are given a hint in the beginning of the movie, share a connection to the "town-king" casino and saloon owner Mr Dillon (and who's literally sitting on gold), who lives with a Portuguese (!!!) singer played by... Mila Yovovich. There's also Mr Dalglish (played by Wes Bentley, desperately needing a shave) who comes to the city to plan a railroad. In the snows of Northern California these 5 characters try hard to stage a drama of human betrayal and passion, of choice we often have to make between gold and love. The problem is we don't give a damn about them. There are Chinese sluts and dirty gold-diggers, some shootings (for what reason?), some fires, a snow-blizzard, a carnival, a wedding and a funeral. The whole story, which takes place either in a brothel or in the snows, is bleak and freezingly dispassionate. The way characters behave is simply beyond my understanding sometimes. Budding romance between the characters Hope and Dalglish are unpersuasive and never got realized. Maybe they should have chosen one plotline and concentrated on that. A waste of time and talent. Watch it when you want to fall asleep (I was dozing away three times, honestly)! When you buy this film, the only thing you'd like to CLAIM, would be your money back!
