VHS Movie Reviews of Star Trek - The Next Generation, Episode 157: Gambit, Part 2Movie Review: Picard lives! Summary: 4 StarsWhile the Enterprise crew has had to deal with the loss of their beloved Captain and now the kidnapping of their first officer, Commander Data is acting captain of the Enterprise. In a not-so-easy-to-forget scene, Data must confront Worf about insubordination and put the honor-bound Klingon in his place, putting their friendship to the test. Worf has grown weary of Data's seeming lack of concern and delay in acting upon leads that would help them recover Riker, but Worf learns to trust the electronic captain. Worf proves instrumental to confronting a renegade Klingon ship when Data's overly polite queries are fruitless.
Meanwhile, Picard is alive, but not so well, aboard the mercenary ship. He uses the identity of a supposed smuggler, Galen, to protect himself against Baran as he would likely kill him if he new who he really was. Picard's familiarity with Romulan artifacts and archeology and anthropology in general are his saving grace, as Baran loathes him and plans on eliminating him as soon as he finds whatever it is he's looking for.
Picard makes bold gestures of dislike for Riker so that Baran will grow fond of Riker by default, following the maxim, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." The Romulan aboard, Tellara, reveals to Galen she is actually an undercover Vulcan named T'Pal - is this supposed to be the same T'Pal from "Star Trek: Enterprise," or is this just a common Vulcan name like "Judy"? Who knows? Picard reciprocates by letting the Vulcan operative know his true identity as well so they can coordinate a mutiny. T'Pal reveals to Picard that Baran is seeking the mythical Stone of Gol - a powerful psionic resonator that is the ultimate weapon from Vulcan's dark, violent past.
Riker and Picard continue to stealthly plan their gambit against Baran as they travel from one archeological site to another, plundering the seemingly worthless artifacts in an attempt to find the missing pieces of the puzzle.
Baran gives Riker a test of loyalty by ordering him to attack Galen on their away mission to steal an artifact from the Enterprise as their Klingon contact has been taken aboard under the guise of performing "Health and Safety" inspections aboard the Klingon's tiny ship.
Troi, Crusher, Worf & Data show off their best Poker faces as Picard and Riker come storming through the Enterprise with their rag-tag group of galactic thieves, weighing both relief, shock, surprise and utter confusion as the dead comes running in, phasers blazing. A fun ending to this interesting two-parter.
Summary of Star Trek - The Next Generation, Episode 157: Gambit, Part 2This is a satisfying conclusion to part 1. Riker and Picard are aboard a mercenary vessel, forced to fire at their own beloved Enterprise to keep the sadistic Baran from killing them. The episode is full of twists and ruses as Riker and Picard try to hide their Starfleet loyalties while dealing with the shifting alliances of the mercenary ship's crew. Back on the Enterprise, Data and Worf discover a new tension in their relationship as Worf grows increasingly frustrated with Data's slow and methodical command decisions. Richard Lynch enjoyably hams it up as Baran, but it's Robin Curtis (best known to fans as Lieutenant Saavik from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock), playing a badass Vulcan named Tallera, who steals the show. --Ali Davis
