Movie Review: ONCE AGAIN, A SCREAMING GOOD HORROR FILM 8.5 OUT OF 10
Summary: 4 Stars
Unfortunately, critics didn't particularly like this film, and people are divided about this third film. While I will admit that it falls below the standards set by the previous films, this is still a very good slasher that puts on a good show, and like its predecessors still serves as a great late-night horror film.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: The film starts off with Cotton Weary (The man Sidney accused of murdering her mother in the first film) who is now a millionaire who has his own television show, and then he and his girlfriend are murdered in their lavish home by another copycat killer. Then we are once again introduced to Sidney Prescott who has tried to move on from the events of the first two films and now lives in a secluded place and runs a telephone women's helpline. However, her life as well as the lives of Gale Weathers and Dewy are turned upside down once again when actors on the set of the film Stab 3 start getting killed by the copycat killer and the other actors on the set are also dragged into a grand plot to killing Sidney. Unfortunately, Kevin Williamson didn't write the script for this film, and it doesn't leave you guessing as much as the first two. It's simply an okay plot.
MUSIC: Marco Beltrami is no slouch once again and the music in this film is pretty good and is never boring.
ACTION: This film isn't as action-packed as the first two and the gore has been downgraded which is disappointing. This film is still pretty action-packed though and was rarely ever boring, but there were some boring moments which dragged the film down. But, for the most part this area is pretty good like it should be.
ACTING: Returning actors Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette deliver great performances once again as they did in the previous films, but the other actors aren't so notable. The other actors are a mixed bag; some are good while others are just plain awful. Overall, this area is half and half.
HUMOR: This film has a bit more humor than the second film which is a plus. But it doesn't have the humor flare of the first film. But still, this film can be pretty funny and there is a good deal of witty dialogue.
OVERALL: Despite the areas this film lacks in, it's still a great film to watch. While people are mixed on it, it sure beats the hell out of watching crap like Prom Night. This is a solid third entry that is well-made and still pretty entertaining, and once again is a great late-night horror flick. I can't wait for the upcoming Scream 4!
THE GOOD: Great music, pretty action-packed, a good sense of humor, and a good portion of the actors are good.
THE BAD: Underwhelming plot, not as much action, not all actors are great, and some boring moments.
Summary of Scream 3 (Special Edition) [VHS]
When Randy the video geek rattles off the rules of surviving a horror movie in Wes Craven's Scream, he speaks for a generation of filmgoers who are all too aware of slasher movie clich?s. Playfully scripted by Kevin Williamson with a self-aware wink and more than a few nods to its grandfathers (from Psycho to Halloween to the Friday the 13th dynasty), Scream skewers teen horror conventions with loving reverence while re-creating them in a modern, movie-savvy context. And so goes the series, which continues the satirical spoofing by tackling (what else?) sequels while sustaining its own self-contained mythology. Catty reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) turns grisly murders into lurid bestsellers, a cult of killer wannabes continues to hunt spunky psycho-survivor Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) for their 15 minutes of fame, and a cheesy movie series (Stab) develops within the movie series.Scream remains the high point of the series--a fresh take on a genre long since collapsed into routine, but Scream?2 spoofs itself with witty humor ("Why would anyone want to do that? Sequels suck!" opines college film student Randy), and delights with more elaborate set pieces and all-new rules for surviving a horror movie sequel. The endangered veterans of the original film reunite one last time for Scream?3, which plays out on the movie set of Stab?3. (It's a trilogy within a trilogy!) With Williamson gone, replacement screenwriter Ehran Kruger tries to mine the formula one more time. It's a little tired by now, and pale imitations (Urban Legend, I Know What You Did Last Summer) have further drained the zeitgeist, but the film bubbles with bright humor, and director Craven is stylistically at the top of his game. As a trilogy, it remains both the most consistently entertaining and self-aware horror series ever made. --Sean Axmaker
