Ashley Judd gives an astonishing performance in this coming-of-age tale. The film itself reflects the quiet, pensive personality of Judd's character, Ruby Lee Gissing. The film is later reflected in Toni Morrison's 1998 novel "Paradise" with the first chapter titled: "Ruby." Very artistically crafted.
