VHS Movie Reviews of Roots 6 Video Box SetMovie Review: Still absolutely captivating Summary: 5 StarsI can't believe it's taken ALL these years for this to come out on DVD (actually, it's been available to libraries and schools, but not for sale to the public). What's up with that? Did they think that the 2nd highest-rated show of all time (beaten only by the final episode of MASH) wouldn't be popular as a DVD?
Watching it again now, after 30 years, I have to say that Roots still holds up really well. More than really well. It was absolutely captivating. The story is very personal and powerful.
Which is a good thing, since the acting is pretty uneven (there are some great performances, as well as some horrible miscastings...Sandy Duncan as an 18 year old girl?). The directing is a bit off in spots. ALL the sets look like a back lot in Topanga Canyon (I keep expecting a MASH helicopter to fly overhead). And parts of the script have an awkward ABC-After-School-Special "edutainment" feel about them (hey, let's have an unnatural three minute conversation about the "Golden Triangle" slaveship route that reads like something out of an encyclopedia).
But the story itself is compelling enough that it's all forgivable. More than forgivable. I couldn't stop watching, disc after disc.
Movie Review: Outstanding Series Summary: 5 StarsI bought this DVD series to help my children understand just one aspect of the Afro American experience. I want them to understand how far we have come and how the struggle has changed. More importantly, how important it is to understand how yesterday can impact today and tomorrow but it doesn't have to paralyze you or prevent you from achieving your dreams. This DVD accomplishes that, it took generations, but the dream of freedom was realized and the hope for a better tomorrow never died.
Movie Review: Roots Summary: 2 StarsThe complete story was not there. There was a lot more to the actual Mini Series. We felt that we had been cheated.
Movie Review: A Timeless Piece Summary: 5 StarsI haven't had a chance to watch the DVDs but I bought them because this was such a great TV series. I look forward to showing my sixteen year old son the story of Roots. I'm also looking forward to watching it without commercials. I taped it years ago from network TV but my tapes have all of the commercials in them.
Movie Review: Great for the history buff! Summary: 5 StarsI was first introduced to this miniseries in 8th grade when my class watched it as part "Social Studies" class. I was hooked from then on! Always have been a fan of any kind of history that had to do with "life stories" about people. This is an excellent chronological life of a slave family between 1750-1860's. Each generation is shown from a newborn to old age & is very detailed about their slave experience, by showing both joys and sorrows.
