VHS Movie Reviews of Quick & The Dead [VHS]

Movie Review: GOOD service
Summary: 5 Stars

I paid a lil extra for 2 days delivery for this DVD and it worked. This is an AWESOME western movie. It was Russell Crowe's break-through movie I felt. Well done!

Movie Review: Disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars

I sat through this last night on network TV. Wish I could have that hour and a half back. This movie shouldn't really be called Western. It's more like a strange, dysfunctional parody that isn't funny. The dialogue is so trite that it distracts from good scraps of acting. The cast could and should have been impressive. Gene Hackman reprises his typecast role as the resident control freak. Sharon Stone is the absurdly beautiful victim seeking vengeance. The ending fizzles. If you enjoy graphic violence and not much else, this is the movie for you. If you would rather have characterization, plot and maybe even a life lesson, consider the other Quick And The Dead movie that stars Sam Elliott.

Movie Review: What fun!
Summary: 5 Stars

A lot of people got a good career boost from this movie. I think this is Gene Hackman at his bad guy best. From sunglasses to power lines to dynamite, this is western parody at it's best.

Movie Review: Good movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this version of The Quick and the Dead, even though it's the only version I've seen, lol. Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Gene Hackman, and Leonardo DiCaprio are spectacular and are the right fit for the characters in this movie.

Movie Review: Fun for a while
Summary: 2 Stars

Because "The Quick and the Dead" stars Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Russell Crowe and is energetically directed by Sam Raimi it works better than it should. The story is an all too familiar tale of revenge that is full of cliches. Even with the big name stars, the best performances are by the supporting players like Lance Henriksen, Keith David, and Kevin Conway. Ellen, a.k.a. The Lady (Stone) drifts into the town of Redemption to discover that the citizens are under the oppressive rule of Mayor Herod (Hackman). He takes half of their earnings and collects at the end of each week. Desperate to be rid of him the citizens pool their limited funds and hire an assassin to take him out. Herod can't figure out who the professional is since Redemption is overcrowded with killers who are in town for the annual Quick Draw Contest. Participants include Ace Hanlon (Henriksen), Clay Cantrell (David), Scars (Mark Boone Junior), and the Kid (DiCaprio). The Kid is the reigning fastest gun and also Herod's son. Ellen enters the competition under the assumption that she has her eyes on the $150,000 prize but she has other motives. When she was a little girl Herod murdered her father, before her eyes. After all these years she has returned to Redemption to kill him. The last, and most unwilling, participant is Cort (Crowe). At one time Cort was Herod's partner but he later found God and renounced his violent past. Herod forces Cort to participate and Cort tries to save his and Ellen's soul as the tournament progresses. The leads all turn in disappointing work. Stone is horribly weak, Hackman is repeating his "Unforgiven" role, DiCaprio's Kid is too young and cocky and Crowe is far too solemn. Raimi livens things up during the battles with his usual tilted angles and quick zooms but the story and the film grow tiresome. There are occasional moments of fun and excitement but it feels more Dead than Quick as it rolls on.
