VHS Movie Reviews of Prospero's Books [VHS]

Movie Review: It's a ballet
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of my favorite films, and I believe that the key to understanding and appreciating it is to realize that it is not literally a film of "The Tempest" -- it's a ballet based on the play. Yes, it is a rather unconventional ballet, one which could only be presented in film, rather than staged, because even things like overlayed images are part of the choreography. But you wouldn't expect to be able to follow the story of, say, "Swan Lake" (or "Romeo and Juliet"...) just from seeing the ballet if you weren't already familiar with the story (or able to read it in the program notes), and the same is true here. Much of what you see on screen is the sort of stylized, non-literal interpretive action you find in any ballet. Yes, there are spoken words, but in a sense, they are mostly used as a part of the score.

Now, if there were only a DVD release...

Movie Review: Don't call this Shakespeare
Summary: 2 Stars

This movie should be called "Gielgud in Love..." with his own voice. It's an interesting experiment, and an interesting idea, but it is so narcissistic and indulgent. Prospero's Books lacks all of the passion of the Tempest, sells it short by falling in love with an admittedly great Shakespearean actor saying all of the lines in a beauitful if somewhat detached way. Please, save your money and rent it if you must, but preferrably go see a live production!

Movie Review: Worst Movie/Film Ever
Summary: 1 Stars

It is nothing more than pornography and really nasty pornography at that.

Movie Review: A bad acid trip, but fun.
Summary: 5 Stars

If youve never done acid but plan on doing it in the the future, DONT WATCH THIS MOVIE WHILE TRIPPING!! Honestly, you dont really dont have to do acid just watch this movie and youll practically get th esame effect, just without the permanent effects and trip flashbacks. Other than that though its a great movie, I didnt really listent to the dialogue as much as I just watched everyting happen. The red guy that dances is really crazy. In conclusion, if your a fan of acid and surreal stuff then you should see this movie.

Movie Review: An absolutely brilliant adaptation of The Tempest
Summary: 5 Stars

If you haven't read William Shakespeare's The Tempest, this film will likely confuse you. That being said, it's probably one of the most elegant and rich films I've seen. The Tempest is my favorite Shakespearean plays, so to see it done in such a clever and non-traditional way was refreshing.

The film is ripe with colors and sounds and movements that make you feel as though you are surrounded by the spirits which are so abundantly portrayed in the film. At first I was a bit confused by the purpose of a multitude of naked people with seemingly little purpose, but once I fell into the rhythm of the film it made perfect sense. The film was able to capture, as a staged version of this play couldn't, what it was like for Prospero to be constantly surrounded by spirits and faeries (i.e. the naked people).

If you are a lover of Shakespeare, or merely well done film, I highly recommend this film. Sir John Gielgud gives an outstanding performance and proves why he was, and remains, one of Britain's top Shakespearean actors.
