VHS Movie Reviews of Prehistoric Women (1967) [VHS]

Movie Review: Better Than You Might Think
Summary: 3 Stars

There is a tendency to put down admittedly campy films as unworthy of serious consideration. One such film that is worthy of passing note is PREHISTORIC WOMEN. No one could possibly take seriously any movie that has as many loopy ingredients as a stationary Rhino god (that moves only when pushed on rollers, hordes of bikini-clad forest beauties, African tribes people who dance as in a Busby Berkely musical, and time travel brought about by touching the horn of that rhino. Incredible as it may seem, all of these disparate elements coalesce to the point that one can sit back and not bother about the logical flaws that are supremely abundant. The plot of a white hunter leading a safari somewhere in Africa serves only as a vehicle to allow a few dozen nubile lovelies to dance around their rhino god. Martine Beswick is Kari, the evil leader of a tribe of prehistoric brunettes who have enslaved yet another tribe of blonde lovelies led by Saria (Edna Ronay). Both have met a Great White Hunter David (Michael Latimer) and have fallen for him. He loves Saria, who is punished by Kari, who in turn is spurned by him. Much of the best parts of PREHISTORIC WOMEN is watching these women boogaloo around their rhino. Miss Bestwick shows off her form as she slinks around a bed to seduce Michael, who for some ungodly reason prefers the more ordinary Saria over the truly exotic Kari. The story includes a rationale for the existence of two tribes of competing women and the slavery of the menfolk who are kept locked up in chains presumably for breeding. PREHISTORIC WOMEN is not meant to punctuate any racial or sociological theories to explain why some groups seek dominance over others. It is a surprisingly engrossing camp film that includes any wild scenes that one might think of to cause one to watch even as one giggles.

Summary of Prehistoric Women (1967) [VHS]

Deep in the African jungle, great white hunter David Marchant (Michael Latimer) discovers a secret Amazon society where blondes don't have more fun. Captured after trespassing on the sacred grounds of a dangerous tribe of albino-rhino worshippers, he escapes execution by entering a hidden land where women in fur bikinis have enslaved the men, and the brunettes are served by subservient (and quite buxom) blonde slaves. Naturally David falls for cleavage-endowed Saria (Edina Ronay), who believes he is their legendary savior, while the vicious, dark Queen Kari (Martine Beswick) decides to make him her own personal servant to cater to her... every need. Director-producer Michael Carreras (who also wrote the film under the pseudonym "Henry Younger") reused leftover sets from One Million Years B.C. and never leaves the confines of the studio for this campy bit of jungle-woman cheese, which threatens to become overwhelmed by its claustrophobic atmosphere. We get tribal "hoochie-koochie" dances, a Vegas floor show by the blondes, sacrifices to the "devils of the darkness" (with such regularity you have to wonder how they haven't run out of candidates), and Queen Kari takes a milk bath ? la Cleopatra. Beswick is the only performer who hits the right note of overheated melodrama; the other cast members seem to be taking this goofy claptrap far more seriously than it deserves. Beware the white rhinoceros! --Sean Axmaker
