VHS Movie Reviews of Once Upon a Honeymoon

Movie Review: A movie with great cast but set in a wrong time
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie is a romantic comedy about a radio reporter named Patrick O'Toole (Cary Grant), and a socialite named Katie O'Hara, aka Katherine Butt-Smith. The movie is set during the World War II amidst Nazi invasion of Europe, and concentration camps, which makes the theme of the movie a little insensitive and offensive. On the positive note, the movie has an excellent cast; Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers (in my judgment they make an excellent couple), and it is directed by Academy award winning director Leo McCarey, known for classics such as; An Affair to Remember; Love Affair; The Awful Truth; and Going My Way.

When gold-digger Katie travels from to Austria to marry Baron Von Luber (Walter Slezak), amidst Fuehrer's invasion; Pat O'Toole prepares to cover the big story of an American showgirl marrying a rich European aristocrat. Pat instantly smitten by Katie follows her and her fianc?e Von Luber to Prague, Czechoslovakia, and latter to Warsaw, Poland; both of which falls to the Nazis coinciding Baron's visits. Soon Pat and Katie realize that Von Luber is Hitler's right-hand man, and he is behind Fuhrer's invasion. Katie risks her own life to investigate her husband Von Luber in a very hostile territory. Eventually Pat and Katie escape to Paris, France pretending as married American couple. Both spend sometime in concentration camps on the suspicion that they are Jewish couple before being freed by an American consul.

The spoofs are; when Pat impersonates Katie's tailor, prior to her wedding to the Baron, only to have the real one show up; and later in the movie when Pat and Katie are free to go back home to United States, he remains in Europe to take a brief stint as a broadcaster for the German propaganda machine. The German plan backfires, when he announces that the Baron is planning to overthrow the Fuhrer, and that Baron is married to an American Jewish woman! The final part is somewhat bizarre when the Von Luber and Pat confront again in a passenger ship going to the United States. You will like this movie if you are a fan of either Cary Grant or Ginger Rogers; in spite of the fact this movie is not politically correct!
