VHS Movie Reviews of Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven Of Bliss

Movie Review: My Favorite Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my favorite movie of all time! Everyone can relate to something in this movie! Our family actually got stuck behind a chicken truck once!!!! The whining kid brother, the always cheerful Mom ("Let's have a picnic!"), the grumpy old man! How many catastrophes can happen on one trip?! Hasn't such a trip happened to you?! You'll laugh through the whole thing!

Movie Review: Every family has a perpetually cranky kid.
Summary: 4 Stars

From the shadow of the steel mills in northern Indiana comes this charming little tale by "Christmas Story" writer Jean Shepherd. Herein is a relaxed and familiar comedy for the whole family, but probably best suited to an older audience.
Jerry O'Connell takes over the role of Shepherd's literary persona, Ralph, with James B. Sikking applying his prodigious talent to the role of the "old man." The movie actually contains three plotlines, one about Ralph taking a summer job, one about the family losing their dog, and the final story about the family cartrip to Michigan for some fishing. This is familiar territory for my family, as we have lived/been born/vacationed/worked in northern Indiana or southern Michigan for my whole life.
The job subplot isn't bad, but the dog story comes from a little out of left field. The vacation story is the over-arching story, and the road trip part of the movie will be very familar to any good red-blooded, red-meat eating, red-car driving Midwesterner. For the record, my sister was the cranky kid.
This isn't high cinema, but if you come from a functional family and want to reawaken some warm memories, or if you come from a dysfunctional family and want to see that even the best of families have their quirks, sit a spell on a Saturday afternoon and pop this movie in.

Movie Review: Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss vs A Christmas Story
Summary: 3 Stars

This video is comparatable to the Christmas movie "A Christmas Story". It is told in third person and anyone who has gone cross country in a car with your family growing up will apprecieate the humor found in this. James Sikking plays a role very opposite of his roll in Hill Street Blues. My family and I enjoyed this video very much.

Movie Review: We watch this one over and over and it's still great!
Summary: 5 Stars

Written and narrated by Jean Sheppard--Jean always has a "bit" role in each of his movies ("the boss" in Ollie Hopnoodle and "Santa" in A Christmas Story. There is another of his movies "The Great American 4th of July and Other Disasters" and it is just as hysterical but I can never find it in video stores. Please bring these movies back--my tape is just about worn out!

Movie Review: Real life enough to be funny!
Summary: 4 Stars

Anyone who has gone on a family trip in the car will relate to something in this movie! My kids and I have watched this together many times on cable and want to get our own copy. The one line we always quote while driving past craft stores is, "we're not getting any junk today!" Especially when we see windmills by the road! In fact, I bought one just because of that scene. The other line around meal time is, "I want a peanut butter and Jelly Sandwich!" with visions of food flying out the window. The family must see this video! Please bring it back so we all can have it for our grandchildren! Its great!
