VHS Movie Reviews of Naughty Marietta

Movie Review: WONDERFUL!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

First saw this film when I was 13, on late night tv. I'm 51....and I never get tired of watching it. It's wonderful.

Movie Review: This, MacDonald/Eddy's first, was possibly their best.
Summary: 5 Stars

Naughty Marietta is my favorite Jeanette MacDonald/Nelson Eddy movie. My grandmother used to hum the tunes from this movie to me when I was little, and she encouraged me to watch for all their movies on the re-runs. But they never came. So I went out and bought all of the movies they appeared in together, once they were available on video.

This one if fabulous. Although there are one or two of their movies I have only watched a couple of times because they were not stellar in my opinion, I have viewed this one more than 20 times. I just cannot get enough of the great voices these two have, plus the excellent songs themselves, and the fire that sparks between the two actors during the scenes.

It is my understanding that the opening song in this movie brought the house down with cheers and standing ovations from audiences across the nation. When's the last time you were in a theatre and saw THAT happen?

And could the puppy (actually it took several puppies to film the scene, but the script calls for one) be any cuter, climbing the stairs to try and catch up with Jeanette?

Want more comedy? Focus on actor Frank Morgan (the wizard in "The Wizard of Oz"). His co-stars have a hard time not laughing out loud while watching him. Watch the scene at the punch bowl, and keep an eye on him when he stares down the Princess' uncle (actor Douglas Dumbrille) during "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life." He's priceless.

Could Nelson's voice be any more dynamic than in "'Neath the Southern Moon"? These two don't take off one stitch of clothing, but that is one hot tune ("'Neath the spreading shade of palms, you WILL surrender") for its time.

Jeanette may not have had the most operatic voice of all time, but her voice is the sweetest I have ever heard. Listen to her hold that note in "Italian Street Song." Plus, she has an excellent sense of dramatic timing and facial expression.

If you think those are fake tears in "Sweet Mystery of Life," you might want to read up on the real-life love affair these two shared. Some have called this song the greatest song ever written.

Nelson is a bit tense in the final scene, when he comes to her bedroom to rescue her. I wish they had re-shot that one because he can -- and does -- do a much better job than that. But if you can get past the awkwardness of that one scene, the rest of the movie is a treasure.

Think I'll watch it again tonight

Movie Review: A true "happy ending" movie with great music.
Summary: 5 Stars

It may be way up there on the cheesy and unrealistic scale, but Naughty Marietta is an awesome movie to watch when you're feeling low. The music is fabulous (Jeanette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy have the best voices I have ever heard) and the movie leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling. It's also a movie for all ages. My grandmother loves it, and I (a teenager) do too.
