VHS Movie Reviews of M Butterfly [VHS]Movie Review: good Summary: 4 Starsi gave this movie four stars because it was pretty good but not excellent. not as good as the play though ad this is migth be one of the reasons why it was not as popular with hollywood goers than theater goers. jeremy irons was good ad it was one of the reasons why this film was saved.
Movie Review: Jeremy Irons was wonderful, but his "butterfly" was not . Summary: 3 StarsI gave this film 3 stars for the wonderful performance of Jeremy Irons. He gives a very sensitive and authentic performance. However, the "butterfly" was not believable and that is the downfall of this film. To believe that a diplomate actually was deceived by a man portraying a woman, you, as the viewer, also have to see him as a woman, and this actor simply was not effective. There have been many actors who have been able to do a much more convincing job. Once again, I found the incredible talent of Jeremy Irons wasted in a film that does not measure up.
Movie Review: A Truly Beautiful and Tragic Story Told Well Summary: 4 StarsBefore I had watched the movie, "M Butterfly" and been some what of a myth. I have heard bits about it, and that is was truly a scandalous affair. Since I am a Jeremy Irons fan, I decided to give it a try. I was surprised to find myself so intensely moved by the convincing actors and plot. It shows us the inside of a man's heart, and his genuine love for whom he thought the perfect woman. This is a very unique movie in itself and deserves to be watched.
Movie Review: A mixture of intense emotions and tragedy Summary: 5 StarsI thought that this movie was compelling in a unique way. Jeremy Irons was superb in his role, ever so convincing of his feelings towards John Lone's character. The movie teaches viewers about Madamme Butterfly and at the same time, it provides a view into Chinese culture and the geography of China as well. Jeremy Iron was great in this movie, he could make you feel the betrayal and the pain suffered as a result of his love for his vision of the perfect lady.
Movie Review: I love Irons and Cronenberg, but ooohhh... Summary: 2 StarsSimply put, the overall execution was wanting. The individual elements were good: acting, production, sets, costuming, etc...but they didn't mesh well at all. This was highly disappointing to me, as I had read the play. And although I realize that it was part of the point, the actor in me really wished that a better casting choice could have been made in place of Lone. He's a superb actor but altogether too masculine to be convincing in any way to the audience. Again, I realize that it was necessary (i.e., only a person who thought of the East as "effeminate" could have fallen for that "pretty face"), but perhaps a little help for the audience would have been nice. Of course, I don't know of any actors who would have fit the role better, but still... Anyway, the individual elements, plus the marvelous construction of the last scenes, save this film from falling completely flat on its face.
