VHS Movie Reviews of Little Big ManMovie Review: Absolutely Hilarious! Summary: 5 StarsThis movie is one of our all time favorites! Even if you don't like westerns, you should watch it! Absolutely hilarious.......
Movie Review: A superbly entertaining western! Summary: 5 StarsThis review is for the 2003 Paramount DVD.
Dustin Hoffman stars as Jack Crabb, a 121-year-old man who has a lot of stories to tell about his life as a boy and a young man in the Wild West. He flashes back to when he was 10 years old and tells how he and his older sister were the only survivors of a hostile Indian attack, and was later rescued and taken in by a different Indian tribe. From that point on, Crabb launches a long narrative story of incredible proportions with tales about living with Indians, western pioneers and even famous historical figures like General George Custer and Wild Bill Hickok.
This film was made in 1970 and it's clearly more "contemporary" than westerns of the `40's and `50's. First, there's clearly more sexual discussion and activity but none of it is graphic. Also, it gives a lot more insight to the Indian tribal culture than I can ever recall seeing in a movie of this genre - far better than 'Dances With Wolves'. Also, there's clearly more of a comedy element in this film compared to the westerns of years past. I've never been a big fan of Dustin Hoffman, but I will say this is by far his best role and best movie. The film does seem to have some political/social commentary such as typically portraying whites as the oppressors and Indians as the victims (I'm part native American - so I'm not biased either way). But in spite of these minor criticisms, it's a terrific film and I strongly recommend it. The cinematography of rural Montana and Western Canada is stunning!
The DVD quality is great. The widescreen picture is sharp, colorful and clean and the sound is excellent for a movie made in 1970. There are no extra bonuses, which is a major shame for a film of this quality.

Movie Review: Typical Hollywood Revisionism Summary: 2 StarsThomas Berger's classic novel is morphed into a cartoon in this ludicrous movie. The acting was great and the cinematography breathtaking, but where the book was blessed with depth and complexity, playing the white man/red man conflict straight down the middle, the movie is cursed with modern Hollywood's typical overcompensation for the sins of its past, when they would show Injuns as one-dimensional savages. Now the white man has to play the savage to the Native American's noble genius.
I appreciate Berger's clear depictions of both groups as flawed in their own ways. His story-telling is so compelling, I have read the book many times and am always captivated. But when I see the movie, all I can do is roll my eyes at the low intelligence level it is aiming for (to experience a classic example of this dumbing down from paper to celluloid, read "Congo", then go watch the movie).
If you enjoy beating up on white civilization, watch the movie. But if you want to experience a truly great historical novel, and want to really get to know "Grandpa" Lodgeskins, read the book.
Movie Review: Great MOVIE!! Summary: 5 StarsI thought my husband was crazy when he wanted me to watch another western. Until I watched this movie, I thought all Westerns were pretty much the same, but this one isn't like any other Western I've seen. I can't believe that is Dustin Hoffman!! He is hilarious in this movie. Very unique storyline and very very funny. Just a great movie that will get you laughing everytime you watch it.
Movie Review: Pretty brilliant Summary: 4 StarsThomas Berger's book was probably a masterpiece but I found it hard to read. This movie IS a masterpiece thanks to its compulsively viewable nature, although it has dated somewhat (Dustin's hair always looks a bit 70s). For a charming, yet deeply serious, view of the Wild West through a revisionist prism it's a mind-enhancing experience. Plus, it's lots of fun.
