VHS Movie Reviews of Literary Masterpieces: The Count of Monte Cristo

Movie Review: A great movie
Summary: 3 Stars

I disagree with many of the other reviews that are posted here. I adventure in the movie may appear dull compared to the pageturner but when the movie itself is evaluated alone I believe that the movie is excellent. Although the movie did leave out many aspects that seemed important in the book the time I enjoyed the time I spent watching the movie. I especially like the interperation that Albert should have been the son of Dantes and Mercedes. The character of Dantes and Mercedes were well played. The parting sceen of Dantes and Mercedes was truly thouching.

Movie Review: Pretty Decent Film Version of the Dumas Classic Novel
Summary: 3 Stars

I saw this many years ago, on the Hallmark Hall of Fame (or some such) program and was very, very impressed with the film. I still remember how impressed I was, even though since then I've read the book and seen the new version of the film (with Gerard Depardieu.) It has many things to recommend it, but it isn't terribly faithful to the book. It has been considerably 'dummied-down' for general audiences, but if the purpose is to get you to read the book and interest you in literature, it suceeds admirably. Richard Chamberlin is adequate as Edmond Dantes. Louis Jourdan is great as de Villefort, Donald Pleasance is also fabulous as Baron Danglars. Tony Curtis is terrible as Fernand Mondego, absolutely the worst performance I've ever seen him do, but he handles his lines in his big denouement scene with Dantes admirably [bad, bad fencing however.] Kate Nelligan as Mercedes is wonderful, and you look at her and don't wonder why Dantes loved her so. I don't remember who played the Abbe Faria, but this actor did a very fine job too. It really isn't a bad rendition, but it could have been better. Worth viewing and a good intro to interest younger generations in great literature.

Movie Review: WOW!
Summary: 4 Stars

This tale from Alexander Dumas is what started my love for classical literature. Although I agree that the book has much more detail, the movie was a work of art all its own. Richard Chamberlain brings Edmund Dante to life. A truly must see!

Movie Review: A movie that will stay with you forever.

I watch the movie back in Romania and it left a wonderful impression

Movie Review: Fits the stereotype
Summary: 2 Stars

The Count of Monte Cristo is by far the best piece of literature in my collection, yet when I saw this movie I was greatly disappointed. The director failed to direct Chamberlain into the intensity and the morality of Dantes and the lack of equally important details of the book were left out due to reasons not understandable to me. This movie fits the stereotype: the book was (WAY) better than the movie. Instead of spending 3 hours with this bad adaptation of a masterpiece, why not read the book and get a lot more experience and depth out of it?
