VHS Movie Reviews of Jimi Hendrix - Blue Wild Angel (Live at the Isle of Wight) [VHS]

Movie Review: Half Bad
Summary: 3 Stars

The first half of this performance is horrible due to equipment problems. The second half of the performance is great. It's worth buying for the second half of the performance. Too bad they did All Along the Watchtower during the first half of the performance.

Movie Review: One of the best-filmed Hendrix concerts, even if not one of his best
Summary: 5 Stars

This concert is a must have for Hendrix fans for all the reasons listed by others below, plus it comes with the whole concert on 2 CDs, even the 3 songs not on the DVD (Hey Baby, Hey Joe and Midnight Lightning, the latter is mistakenly listed on the box as being on the DVD but isn't), which was a nice surprise. The film quality is great, almost the whole concert is shown, unlike the horrible edited versions of the past, and the concert is not as bad as some might say, although many greater ones have been preserved on tape. On some songs he's distracted by equipment problems, but on others you really can see Hendrix at his best. It's just an uneven concert really, but worth having nonetheless. My only complaint is that this DVD is 'PCFriendly', and so unlike every other DVD in my collection, wouldn't play on my PC as I only had 4 GB free on my hard disk. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a 'PCUnfriendly' version that simply plays by popping it into your disk drive, so I would suggest anyone without a DVD player and a full hard disk take into consideration that you won't be able to watch this DVD. However, still 5 stars for a great release.

Movie Review: GET IT YOU FOOL!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Excellent footage and quality for this period! Great performance of a legend guitar player.

Movie Review: Jimi Hendrix - Blue Wild Angel (Live at the Isle of Wight)
Summary: 4 Stars

It is loud and it is noisy if we compare it with today's live concerts. In the mist of such loudness I heard music. Hendrix's tonality was just cathartic. A lot of what we consider better music today came from hearing and watching jimi. Historically and musically I think this video is a must have for anyone who loves electric guitar, the blues and home grown world music.

Movie Review: Vibrant
Summary: 5 Stars

WOW! "Blue Wild Angel" is one of those concert films that completely "floors" you - the kind you find yourself listening and watching at every opportunity. This DVD should, unquestionably, be included in all public and private musical libraries. A lengendary performance from, in my opinion, the greatest guitarist, ever - Jimi Hendrix.

The unorthodox but rhythmically expressive compositional and vocal abilities of virtuoso Jimi Hendrix are extraordinary and unrivaled. Not only a phenomenal musician, Hendrix was equally a great performer - and "Blue Wild Angel" is an absolute testiment. One song of particular mention is "Foxey Lady." Mid-segment, Hendrix alters the rhythm of the song by communicating with bassist Billy Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell. This change in pace is an excellent example of Hendrix's stupefyingly superb improvisational capabilities.

Aside from the aforementioned "Foxey Lady," other songs worth the purchase were "Spanish Castle Magic," "EZY Ryder," "Message to Love," and Hendrix's rendition of Bob Dylan's classic "All Along the Watchtower." I particularly enjoyed "EZY Ryder," however not as much for musical content as for audience reaction. As the band enters a lenghty measure, two fans (one male and one female), through their excitement, appeared to be "exorcising the demons," per se, or a musical vibrancy-induced hyper-animation. This was truly hysterical - but that is what great music can do for you (or to you, as it were).

All in all, "Blue Wild Angel" is one concert film which is not to be missed. Even if a person does not particularly care for the musical content, the commanding performance and compositional control, together, will appease.
