VHS Movie Reviews of Ed Wood [VHS]Movie Review: Brilliant, ghoulishly funny...Depp and Landau are superb... Summary: 5 StarsAbsolutely brilliant film on the bizarre and quirky cross-dressing filmmaker Ed Wood, played with boyish enthusiasm by JOHNNY DEPP in one of his most offbeat roles. He's the anchor who grounds the film in all its believable foolishness.
Equally skillful are all the surrounding performances, including MARTIN LANDAU (who deservedly won a Supporting Role Oscar), BILL MURRAY, who does amazing things with an underwritten role as a man eager to change his gender, JEFFREY JONES as Criswell, the Magician, and VINCENT D'ONOFRIO as Orson Welles.
But it's the caring relationship between Depp and Landau that defines the comic genius of the film and gives it heart. Both are extremely moving and adept at showing the respect and regard they had for each other when their world seemed to be falling apart. The story doesn't flinch in showing Lugosi's fall from grace with his addiction to morphine and other drugs that eventually took his life.
A near perfect recreation of the '50s Hollywood scene with its low budget studio settings, wisely photographed in the B&W manner of most of the Lugosi thrillers. Entertaining and genuinely funny, moving and absorbing all the way through.
Summing up: One of Tim Burton's best directing jobs. Highest recommendation.
Movie Review: special edition could have been improved upon Summary: 4 StarsRE: audio commentary. Absolutely uneven and atrocious. There is nothing here on the late Ed Wood, either.
they could have included a special doc on the man himself, etc.
Granted, Martin Landau (and the entire supporting cast) is terrific. Depp does fine, but the writers really should have included more of the story. Wood's marriage to Kathy was not smooth sailing at all, but the way it is presented here they would have you believe that it was a cake walk, etc.
There is so much more to the Ed Wood story...and wish someone, someday does it. Ed Wood was a war hero, a purple heart recipient, and the author of dozens of paperbacks.
Also, towards the end of his life, due to having been ripped off left and right by unscrupulous distributors (& other entities), heart-broken as a result, pretty much defeated...he drank heavily and died at the fairly young age of 54.
Burton and his writers give you a fairly decent and dignified version of Ed Wood's life, although it may contain more than just a pinch of sugar.
Still, after all--I have to recommend it.
Lastly, read NIGHTMARE OF ECSATCY by Rudolph Grey--if you want the whole, heartbreakingly tragic tale.
R.I.P., Eddie--wherever you are. You suffered for your art. Some of us, very few of us, will always love that about
you.
Movie Review: Ed Wood Summary: 5 StarsThis suitably quirky, beautifully acted homage to real-life B-movie hack Ed Wood, creator of "Plan 9 from Outer Space" and other bizarre turkeys, could have played the facts of his strange life strictly for laughs. Instead, Burton portrays this oddball visionary with extraordinary warmth and kindred sympathy, in effect honoring the outlandishly awful movies he made. Depp is marvelous in the lead role, giving Wood a bit of mad naivete as he fumbles his way through Hollywood's lower depths. And Landau's crabby performance as the ailing, morphine-addled Lugosi won him an Oscar. Filmed in glorious black-and-white, "Ed Wood" is a droll, endearing tribute to an artless wonder.
Movie Review: Martin Landau. What an actor Summary: 5 StarsLandau made this film what it was for me. The supporting cast was great as well, but Landau was absorbed into his role as Bela Lugosi. Just a masterful work he did.
Movie Review: Great performances by Martin Landauo andJohnny Depp Summary: 5 StarsFive stars definitely !
When I was first entertained by this film, I knew I had to buy it and share it with friends and family.
Johnny Depp is just perfect in this role, Ed Wood would be proud !
Martin Landauo is exacting in his performance of Bela Lugosi.
The part I find really funny is where Bela Lagosi's is wrapping the unplugged giant octopus around himself and then pretends to be struggling with it.
Highly recommended !
