VHS Movie Reviews of Drowning by Numbers [VHS]Movie Review: Watch it 100 times Summary: 5 StarsThis film is definately worth owning, as it bears repeat viewing. I have seen it many, many times, and I still haven't been able to see all of the numbers. The soundtrack is incredible. The story is dark and humourous at the same time. The plot is interspersed with games made up by the characters. Some of them are just whimsical (like Sheep and Tides), others have dark parallels to the plot itself (like Dead-Man's Catch, or the strange variation on Cricket played during the wedding). I am a big fan of Peter Greenaway, and this is definitely my favorite. In fact, this is one of my favorite movies ever, and I just cannot figure out why they haven't released it on DVD!
Movie Review: Cult Movie Time! Summary: 4 StarsGreenaway's rich tapestry of themes includes the obsession of the English with games: Death as a game, sexual games, sundry obsessions and frustrations that are interwoven with memorable visual images which subtly enhance the atmosphere of decadence and moral decay throughout the film. Conventional views of relationships, love, death and morality are challenged by Greenaway's vision which is presented in a succession of offbeat scenes such as beautifully composed close-up shots of insects eating rotten fruit, fireworks at funerals to celebrate death, fat, ugly men and beautiful, naked women. Certainly full of unconventional perspectives.
Movie Review: If you've come this far, get this film Summary: 5 StarsPeter Greenaway's art house approach is most certainly not for everyone. I've seen most of his films, and some I could leave behind (Zed, Draughtmans) while others (I consider Prospero's Books an absolute masterpiece) I would happily indulge in again. Drowning By Numbers is one. It is a deliciously executed black comedy, highly eccentric (what do all those sheep have to do with the tide?) with great performances. Twisted plot (not plot twists, mind you. Just twisted). It all adds up to great fun.
Movie Review: do you like surprises? Summary: 5 StarsThere are not too many surprises left in film. This is one. Take the time to see it. If you can handle some of the 'adult themes', you will see a story you will never forget. Remember---weird is good!
Movie Review: An intriguing puzzle that's fun to decipher Summary: 5 StarsThe film begins with a little girl counting 100 stars while skipping, and so unfolds the location of numbers one to one hundred in order on obscure objects such as bathtubs and dead cows. Whilst we try, and are eager to spot these, we also revel in the bizarre, surreal and lavish artistic cinematic tastes of Greenaway. This film reminded me slightly of the film It Couldn't Happen Here starring the Pet Shop Boys, filmed in a similar location and fashion, and a film of the utter eccentricity of England and complete Englishness. I recommend this picture because of its blatant stylistic touches; and watch it several times because the numbers are not easily spotted first time around. It's an amusing, but sometimes scabrous film.
