Movie Review: One of the most refreshing films I've seen in a long time!!
Summary: 5 Stars
William Macey does an extroadinary job, in this true story, of portraying a man with Cerebral Palsy. He has the motions down pat, and even his facial jestures are realistic. The story is such a heart-warming look at a person who might have gone all through his life thinking that he would never accomplish anything worthwhile. But he has an exceptional mother who never gave up on him, and who challenged him to be anything he wanted to be. She even helped him! With her determination and love, she guides him to a place in life where he finds friendship, love, and respect. A must-see film!!
Summary of Door to Door (2002) [VHS]
WILLIAM H. MACY plays Bill who, despite crippling cerebral palsy, uses humor, initiative and warmth to make his way as a salesman and to make a difference in the lives of his customers.This earnest movie about a door-to-door salesman with cerebral palsy (based on the true story of Bill Porter) could have been cloyingly sweet, but a sense of humor and the clear, unpretentious performance of William H. Macy keep it from drowning in sentiment. Door to Door follows Porter from when he first gets his job (by convincing a skeptical sales manager to give him the worst route the company has) in the mid-'50s, to his brief retirement in the late 1990s, when door-to-door salesmen became outmoded by catalogs and the Internet. The depiction of how Porter became part of the lives of his customers may feel a little pat, but the portrait of Porter himself--particularly how his persistent independent spirit was also a wall between him and others--is honest and affecting. Also featuring Kyra Sedgwick and the great Helen Mirren as Porter's mother. --Bret Fetzer
