VHS Movie Reviews of Closet Land [VHS]Movie Review: captivating Summary: 5 Starsthat's really all there is to say. With the present proliferation of movies, it's nice to see a "film." An excellent psychological journey, with marvelous performances from both cast members.
Movie Review: too powerful for mainstream Summary: 4 StarsI am an actor from the U.K. and had to rent a copy of this film whilst on holiday in L.A. to see it; since it's `release' in 1991 it has virtually vanished without trace! It has been performed as a play [adapted by Bharadwaj] both in the U.S. and U.K. - I saw a production last year at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.Though often pigeonholed as the snarling villain, Alan Rickman here produces work of real subtlety, allowing the audience to peer inside the interrogator as he peers into Madeline Stowe's prisoner; particulaly moving is the scene in which as the `resident witness' he describes himself to the prisoner in the third person. I got the feeling this is the interrogator's only release in the world he has found himself in. Stowe also gets a chance to shine - I suspect she has `risen' to films from much experience in the theatre; her monologue, which allows the camera to linger on her for two minutes, shows real power and sensitivity. A shame then, that this film was not `picked up' on release. In toning down the film or shifting locations Radha Bharadwaj may have made the film more accessible, and ultimately less powerful.
Movie Review: Fantastic Acting Summary: 5 StarsAs an actor myself I look for scripts like this one. For a two person play this is extrordinary. Alan Rickman's Range in this film alone rival's Gary Oldman's in all of his films combined. Now the Rub. If anyone can find the script for this I would appreciate information on how to get it.
Movie Review: 8 years ago i was transifxed! Summary: 5 StarsWhen ever someone mentions Amnesty International I think of this movie and understand the horror that people are going through.
Movie Review: Trigger Material - Truly mind-wrenching Summary: 5 StarsI watched this movie with about 20 other people on video crammed in a tiny building in a compound mock-up. The events of this movie are very possible! This movie depicts not only the issue of government subversion. It also depicts the long lasting psychological affects of childhood sexual abuse (by "MAN" a supposed ex-professor in service of the government), and dissociation (which can SAVE lives), among many other things. It confronts how these things can create a social outcast that if given the chance to speak their mind, the person could be misconstrued as anti-governmental in such a totalitarian state as depicted in this movie. The supposed book written tells of how a little girl locked in the closet by her mother dissociates into her own private world where the clothes are her friends, until her mother comes home to let her out. When the author known only as "AB234" is near finished with the book, the government who has been observing her and her private life all along snatches her in the middle of the night - because such things do not mesh with the governmental overall message, and those who are emotionally frigid are seen as subversives as they do not conform to the supposed proper behavior types as they "withhold".
