Movie Review: The very essence of greatness. Summary: 5 StarsAfter watching this, many people feel it changed their life. This is most certainly the case with me. I watched it as an impressionable 12 year old. Up until then my comedic tastes were very ill refined. Not too long before, I had thought Problem Child was one of the greatest films ever. This philistinism in taste changed when I watched this movie.
I hadn't understood the true meaning of irony until watching the Buttercream Gang. It is impossible to articulate the experience one receives in watching it. Suffice to say the experience is pleasurable. It is such a complete and utter trainwreck, it is not hard to see that this was indeed the intent of the film makers. The creators were comedic genius's, and understood the nuances of comedy. In creating a film "railing against" gangsterism, they were in fact satirizing the whole genre itself.
In one sentence, this is a film that turns the genre on its head, and reinvents the term funny. It may very well be the single greatest comedy I have ever seen in my life.
Movie Review: quotehope Summary: 5 StarsI believe this video may not be the greatest technological advanced, but by no means is the point of the movie cheesy. The main character perservered with faith. His friend has a physical and spiritual journey, traveling far from home. I give this movie and its makers five stars in ministering to many who see this, causing the view to contemplate the strength of faith, "...The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1.
This movie starts in each of home towns and shows the desicion each of us face of what type of person we will choose to turn out to be. Pete goes to chicago, getting involved with the gangs, then visits back home and is violent because he is under conviction, and the "gang" back home that does good, not only does good works, but has faith that love never fails and they minister to pete, their old member who thinks he has outgrown the whole Jesus thing. But, ultimately discovers the power of brotherly love and totally surrenders and through the prayers of the buttercream gang, Pete's stony heart turns to flesh and discovers that God has always loved Him.
I pray that there are many buttercream gangs out there, not going on good works alone, but that have strong faith. Always having appreciated movies that are based on true stories of life, I hope that people watch this and finds it is similar to their own story. Whether they fit in the character of Pete or the "hero/protagonist" It is a good movie to share with your own kids and to shine strong in the strength of Jesus, even when things are the hardest. My hope is that there are more inspired movie makers out there to make more films such as the buttercream gang to help raise this nation's new generation.
Movie Review: They call themselves the blades...Ha ha ha Summary: 5 StarsI was surprised to see this movie on Amazon. The film was originally made by a small company in Utah (I think) that promotes family values and other grabage like that. So of course, The Buttercream Gang is clean as a whistle and is pretty heavy-handed in preaching its message. But this just adds to the entertainment value! The movie is so corny and purposeful that these elements become entertaining by themselves.
Even when I was ten years old and I watched this, I realized how corny and amatuer it was. That only made me love it more. My brothers and I can quote this entire movie. I bet I've seen it more than almost anyone else on the planet. This movie practically raised my brothers and me. We must have watched our favorite parts of it almost every day when we were younger. Even now (I'm 24), we'll throw it on sometimes and get a big kick out of it. Our favorite part is the baseball game. I've always loved the Buttercreamers' treehouse. The blossoming love story is hilarious. They could have at least picked an attractive female for the role! And you have to love Rev. Wilky and Mr. Graff. Both are upstanding gentlemen and potential pedophiles, since they're always hanging out with young boys.
If you have young children, be careful when showing them this movie. The gang scenes are pretty scary. The film includes several gang fights/muggings and even a little bit of gore/blood. But of course, the so-called "gangs" only have three people in them, and they're not packing heat, or shanks, or anything else. They prefer to brawl with their fists, but you never even see anyone throw a punch; you just see the results. The ending is really, really bad. The filmmamkers try to make you think that Pete got capped or wasted in Chicago, but instead, he becomes a classic do-gooder. So why the heck was everyone acting sad? For our (the viewers') sake? Please. How terrible is that. Some of them are even crying and stuff. It's really bad. It doesn't make a lick of sense, except to build some phoney drama. Anyway, I could go on forever about this movie. I gave it five stars because it has so much sentimental value, and I guess it's a good movie for kids. I know I sure used to enjoy it. There's also a sequel, which is much cheesier than the original. But that's a different movie and a different review. Enjoy it!
Movie Review: Dreams for a Better Day Summary: 5 StarsI remember watching this movie over and over when I was younger, but I haven't watched it in years. I popped it in the other day, and was reminded of just how much I loved it. Sure, it may seem a little hokey compared to some of todays entertainment. It's a nice, "down home" story about kids growing up in a little town where everyone knows everyone. The boys are part of The Buttercream Gang, a group that's been around as long as the town. They're nice boys who help out in their community and have fun fishing, swimming, playing baseball, and riding their bikes. One of their friends moves away to Chicago, and comes back visibly changed. They suspect he might have been in a gang and try to help him out, show they still accept him. The movie gives a nice message about what unconditional love is, and how it's not that easy to love your enemies, but you should anyway. What's so wrong with that?? We need more movies like this, nice wholesome movies you can watch with your whole family. I would highly reccomend this movie to anyone, especially those looking for a movie they can watch with their kids. Some reviewers mentioned that their VHS was wearing out--"The Buttercream Gang" (and it's sequel) are both available on DVD-just go to the Feature Films for Families website: www.familytv.com
