VHS Movie Reviews of Bounty Tracker [VHS]Movie Review: "Now you're gonna die, Bounty Tracker! Grawww!!!" Summary: 3 Stars"Bounty Tracker" is a solid B-movie action flick featuring a couple of solid B-movie action stars directed by solid B-movie action filmmaker Kurt Anderson (Martial Law II: Undercover [VHS], Martial Outlaw [VHS]). What more can I say? - it's solid! Okay, let me elaborate my message: 'solid' is a synonym for 'nothing special'. As far as DTV action flicks from the golden era of guns & karate go, this one is situated somewhere in the upper-middle echelons, but it's not really worth buying at the expense of anything else - unless you're a particular fan of either Lorenzo Lamas or Matthias Hues.
The story: when his brother is assassinated before he can testify against the accounts of his dirty ex-partner in the revenue industry, professional "bounty tracker" Jonathan Damone (Lamas, "Renegade", "Falcon Crest") embarks on a mission of vengeance against the sadistic extermination team led by an ex-special forces agent (Hues, I Come in Peace [VHS], No Retreat No Surrender 2 [VHS]).
The plot gets a bit more intricate than what I've described, but it's not worth rewinding the tape if you happen to miss a scene via a trip to the bathroom - you'll know the gist of what's going in practically any other scene. Production values are consistently good in an early-90s kind of way, but then again, the movie doesn't ever try to do anything technically out-of-the-ordinary. Dramatic performances range from decent to weak. Matthias Hues deserves some kind of award for the sheer amount of times he's played villains in films like this, but his presentation here makes even those of his no-name cronies look good (on second thought, that's not quite fair: bad girl Cyndi Pass has had a few starring roles in limited-viewing films like Hindsight [VHS]). Lamas is ever-consistent in his presence, but I personally don't think he was ever really suited to be an action hero; he just doesn't give off that aura of power and confidence that Seagal or Van Damme do.
The fight content is kind of limited, but nevertheless highlighted by an awesome four-on-one encounter followed by a swordfight between Lamas and the members of a pentjak silat school; these two well-choreographed fights are the biggest reasons to see this movie - featuring plenty of throws, kicking, weapons-play, and an awesome leg takedown by Lamas. There are only two other quick encounters aside from the climatic Lamas vs. Hues fistfight, which doesn't feature much martial arts mastery, is too short for its own good, but is nevertheless entertaining in a guttural way. The shootouts aren't anything special at all, but the final shoot & stalk in a junkyard gets some points for suspense.
There are some neat parts to the film - mainly the recognition given to pentjak silat, but also a side-story in which Hues murders an ex-agency partner of his (Judd Omen, who apparently was in Dune) who had been helping troubled neighborhood kids work their way into college; during the final outing, these kids take up shotguns and assist Lamas as he hunts down the bad guys. Speaking of bad guys, I was impressed by the efficiency of the villains in this film: many a times, an action film will feature the top baddie's minions getting picked off one by one by the good guys, but these mercenaries rack up a surprisingly high collective body count and make no empty threats. These aspects shouldn't sway you about whether or not to buy the film, but they're features worth noticing if you do end up with it.
"Bounty Tracker" is not interesting enough to be considered a true hidden gem, so it really boils down to how much you like the main stars. Casual martial arts/action fans can do better, but this one should be a passingly worthwhile addition to the Lamas/Hues completionist's collection.
