VHS Movie Reviews of Before the Rain

Movie Review: The Soundtrack Of Your Dreams
Summary: 5 Stars

How can you review something like Anastasia's "Before The Rain"? Well it's practically impossible to do it. But here are a few things that ought to help you understand the incredible beauty of this album.

"Their music is a unique blend combining: the Byzantine past, through Eastern Orthodox church music, with a rich gamut of ethnic rhythms" says their official web-site (anastasia.com.mk). I couldn't agree more on this. The music is a blend of acoustic instruments fused with modern technology. Goran's voice is relly fantastic. This is macedonian ethno at it's best. Excellent night music, exellent for that early dawn just when you are waking up. It's great if you really want to listen to it, but it's also great as a background music.

I think this will do for now. Now check the sound samples so you'll get a faint idea of what i'm talking about. But don't hesitate to buy it. It will make your life more beautiful. Trust me. This is unlike anything you've ever heard before. After you get it slip in the CD in your player, lay down, relax and enjoy.

If you can see the movie too. It's fantastic, very poerful, very emotional ( it was nominated for an academy award - a real shame it didn't win ).

Oh, by the way - if you have a chance go and see them live. They're good as hell!

Movie Review: Mystical and Enchanting!
Summary: 5 Stars

An excellent soundtrack! Before the Rain is one of my favorite movies and the soundtrack makes it complete! The old tunes mixed with modern sound mixers really plays a big role in this beautiful film. I just hope that more copies of this CD will be brought into stock in the near future. Remarkable!

Movie Review: "Time does not wait because the circle is not round" Huh?!
Summary: 2 Stars

Milcho Manchevski's directorial debut is an obtuse Macedonian trilogy of violence. In "Words", a young monk hides an Albanian terrorist. This is the best realised of the 3 stories, intensely shot, with the sensibility of a silent movie, until the guns start firing. "Faces" is almost a parody of the intensity of "Words", making it unintentionally hilarious. A London photographic editor is pregnant, but to her husband or to her photographer lover? Manchevski goes mad with his camera, rolling around in a taxi and jump-cutting between a couple in a restaurant. The technique ridicules the actors' attempts at performance - and then the guns start firing. The London editor has stills of "Words", so we know something funny is going on. "Pictures" features the photographer returning to Macedonia to visit his cousin's village, where the soldiers from "Words" hang out. It turns out the Albanian terrorist may be his daughter. And then the guns ... But the circle is not round. "Pictures" is as ponderous as "Faces" is fast, and we are glad to see the photographer get it in the back, particularly as Rade Serbedzija is intolerably posey.

Movie Review: MAKES YOU ACHE
Summary: 4 Stars

A parable told backwards... or in a roundabout fashion that is somewhat confusing to follow at first. This is a painful film and at times next to impossible to watch because it is just cruel and painful altogether. It describes deep rooted ethnic conflicts between Macedonians and ethnic Albanians who also reside in Macedonia. The tale focuses on a Macedonian man who has long since left Macedonia and its problems to become a photographer. He lives in London and is having an affair with a woman (played by Katrin Cartlidge who also played in British film Career Girls and Lars von Trier's Breaking the Waves) who announces she is pregnant. She has no clue about the things he has seen and done in the war he has just photographed in Bosnia. He returns to Macedonia to visit family and experiences again the violence and hatred between the people. The details of how things unravel so rapidly and irreparably are better left for the viewer to see for him or herself. I will say that this is a powerful film with a stunning soundtrack, and you will be better for having seen it and contemplated it.

Movie Review: Captures the Haunting Spirit of Place and Time
Summary: 5 Stars

Dark, dramatic, mysterious, intriguing laments in musical form that perfectly fit with the film of the same name. The music is at once gripping, captivating, alluring, and even dangerous. It intoxicates and transports you to the place and time of the music. Indeed, it is an experience to listen to it. This is the mark of a great soundtrack, I think. One which can be taken outside the context of the film for which it was made and played again and again, still evoking the images of the film (or evoking other, perhaps more powerful feelings).

I loved this film (also highly recommend it), but the soundtrack is exquisite and stands alone as a musical achievement.
