VHS Movie Reviews of Bad Taste

Movie Review: Early Peter Jackson, Great Peter Jackson as Always (3 and a Half Stars)
Summary: 3 Stars

Bad Taste, Peter Jackson's first real feature film, was filmed on weekends over the course of many years. This, in itself, is one of the film's most amazing achievements, since there are almost no mistakes, and a four year movie shoot would generally lend itself to many continuity errors, like characters looking different, etc. Unbelievably, the film looks and flows as if it really is all talking place over the course of one very bad day for our characters.
Bad Taste, like Peter Jackson's other notorious early effort, Dead Alive, is a gore-comedy, made almost entirely for the gross-out factor, and to showcase some nasty and brutal make-up effects. Even though this film is incredibly violent, if you are looking for gore, then stick to the Unrated Dead Alive DVD. If you're looking for comedy, Dead Alive is still funnier, too. For a gross-out comedy, Bad Taste nails the gross-out, and fails with the comedy. There are two or three VERY funny scenes, (the sheep towards the end is CLASSIC), but Jackson's attempt at comedy ultimately falls short with amateur humor, centered mostly around the gore.
However, there's a lot of fun to be had here. Jackson's old visual style is in full-force here, with sweeping long shots of the New Zealand landscape (gorgeous) and very unflattering push-ins to low angle close-ups of the main characters during dramatic sequences. Most importantly, though, for Jackson fans, is his relatively large role in this movie. Yes, Jackson acts, and actually plays one of the film's funniest characters. If you're a recent Jackson fan, steer clear, but if you like his older work, Bad Taste is a fun film, but ultimately one which loses a lot with each repeat viewing. If you can rent it, I'd suggest doing that first.

Movie Review: Cult gore movie!
Summary: 3 Stars

Peter Jackson's first film is a classic in the horror genere, a cult movie. But it's not a good movie. Yes, is hilarious; yes, is gory; yes, it has some good moments but...

In the first place, the story is fragemented. It seems like there are two or three movies that have been cut in pieces and then have been put together again. I can mention three stories: the alien people, the two guys in the car, and the alien-busters in the cliff. These three plots are mixed and the result is an erratic timeline. I also have to mention the terrible transition effects that he put between some scenes.

B-Movies are characterized for amateurish acting and this movie is not the exception. Jackson (Derek) character is okey the first 20 minutes of the movie. Then I can hardly see him with all his tics and weird talking. The rest of the characters are just average, not great at all.

Music is out of tune. Basically heavy metal for the action scenes, a gloomy music for the misterious parts and a childish keyboard-based tune for the ?funny?parts. Sound FX are poor and unrealistic.

The gory stuff is okey, considering the low budget. In some cases he reaches his goal: to disguste people showing brains, wounds, guts or puke but in other cases the dummie corpses and fake organs are so unreal that you are really tempted to laugh.

So, you will ask, why am I giving three starts to the movie? I have my reason:
1. Peter Jackson is a talented director that always do what he wants. He wanted to do a gore movie and he did it. He wanted to disgust people and he did it. He wanted to act/direct/write the movie and he did it. You see?
2. If you watch Braindead you'll see the progress: the plot is more interesting and centered, the acting is better, and the gory humor present in the movie is way beter than this one. Bad Taste is the base for what he do next.

My advice: Taste it and then, make your own desicion. And don't forget to watch Dead Alive (aka Braindead, aka Mi mam? se comi? a tu perro).

Movie Review: Funny? You better Believe It!!
Summary: 4 Stars

This film is so funny you can't describe it. I was in tears with laughter. All you need to remember is people called Derick don't run, even with half of their brain hanging out of their head. Well worth buying.

Movie Review: Great movie, bad DVD edition
Summary: 4 Stars

I love this movie!!! The DVD from Anchor bay, is matted, however, adding black bars on the top and bottom(you know, that's what dumb people think widescreen is...in the case of AB's bad Taste, they're right). I prefer watching it as it was shot and released... I wish AB and Lion's Gate would leave the cult DVDs to Synapse and Blue Underground, who know how to treat 'em instead of putting out the shoddiest, cheapest product just to make a buck. F**k you, Anchor Bay!

Movie Review: Great Taste
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of those movies that you watch and it makes you feel happy the whole way through. Its so funny, so action packed, and so gory but at the same time takes it self way over the top with hilarious slap stick humore. By watching this film one can't help but remember other such great horror comedies such as sam raimi's evil dead 2 or peter jacksons Dead Alive. Using next to no money, Jackson was able to make a very entertaining and memerable mark in celluloid history, and he should be forever remembered for it. Hail to the king, baby!
