Movie Review: Light enjoyable chance to live vicariously in France
Summary: 4 Stars
This is light entertainment that can take you away from your own life for awhile. Its very well written and acted. John Thaw is wonderful as Peter Mayles and he captures the spirit of the book.
However, if you are one of those people who insist on a very literal interpretation of the book, you may find fault with this dramatization. "A Year in Provence" was a small book and this DVD is four episodes in length. There is a lot of added material, but its very much in the style of Mayles' book. While I enjoyed the book very much, I found the DVD to be just as much fun with the added bonus of the scenery of Provence.
When we finished watching this DVD, we missed being in Provence with the characters in the story. A warning to potential viewers- you will find yourself on the computer perusing property for sale in Provence when you've finished watching it!

Based on Peter Mayle's international bestseller of the same name, A YEAR IN PROVENCE is the hilarious account of the Mayle's first year in their new home, adjusting to the idiosyncrasies of the locals and the quaint traditions of an ancient and charming region: Winter The Mayles bid adieu to gloomy London and begin their new life in a cozy farmhouse in the Luberon valley.Spring With the glorious Spring comes a parade of visitors lured by the extravagant meals and the generous Mayles. This is not an in-depth look at expatriate living; rather, Mayle gives us a pastiche of the comedic situations he and his wife find themselves in.
