This movie is like a fairy tale turned social satire. A lazy spoilt dandy found himself pennyless due to his prodigality and lack of the most elementary financial skills. His Jeeves-like butler suggests marriage whit a rich woman... and from there we go in a delightfully funny story,brilliantly acted and written, whit many unguessable turns.The scene of the marriage proposal whit a goofy but gentle heiress is histerically funny. A tale of moral maturation unusually amusing, a social satire unusually poignant and a very peculiar love story. Story line described elsewhere - this refers to the VHS revised film version. I saw this in the theater when it first came out and bought it for my collection. A great dark comedy!!! My only complaint was that the original music had been changed from the screen version. I do hope that they restore and return it to a DVD version sometime soon. Hopefully that will happen since Walter Matthau's death - I think it would be a fitting tribute to a truly funny actor!!Movie Review: SUPERB!!

I remember seeing this film years ago, loving it, but shock horror couldn't remember the title just the wonderful storyline. His portrayal was spot on and Elaine was great (what a talented woman) What can I say? his timing, one-liners, particularly the one "Henrietta, you have your head in your arm hole" still makes me laugh. It's just a marvellous film , you love his character and root for Henrietta and the ending brings a big Aaaah! GREAT.
