VHS Movie Reviews of A New Leaf [VHS]Movie Review: It changed my life Summary: 5 StarsI saw this movie in the theater while I was in the last year of college. It is a wonderful, human movie that changed my life. I would certainly buy a DVD and would greatly treasure both the movie I saw thirty plus years ago or the unedited edition. Please do not let this little gem be lost to a generation in need of its graceful humor.
Movie Review: Gets better w/ every viewing... Summary: 5 StarsI too LOVE this film and have just about worn out my videotape. It is understated & priceless. I won't repeat what others have said about it (except that lines from this movie have entered our family lexicon, too, e.g., "carbon on the valves" and "Good DAY, Mrs. Cunliffe"), I mostly wanted to mention Doris Roberts's gem of a part as the housekeeper. She's sly & sexy, and if you'd like to see her some 30 years before Everybody Loves Raymond, rent or buy this. I think this is Walter Mathau's best role, and the marvelous Elaine May is perfect.
Movie Review: Laughed with my son Summary: 5 StarsI have borrowed this several times from my library.
They probably keep this ready when I ask for it.
This last time I persuauded my son who was home from college to watch it with me. He broke up at all my favourite scenes.
Well I have several that I love but one that stands out is May's lawyer trying to persuade her, Matthau is a fortune hunter....and the look on the butler's face at the end of Matthau's rebuttal of the accusation of the lawyer....priceless.
Pity this is not available on DVD...until then I'll probably wear out the library copy.
Movie Review: Where is A New Leaf? Summary: 5 StarsIt looks like everyone who has seen this movie adores it, and yet the studio ignores us. I agree with everyone's reviews, this is a most delightful film. I saw it at the cinema, 2nd feature, of course. I taped it from cable, and have been looking for it since. Guess I missed it at the store on VHS, must have been a short print. Walter Matthau and the lovely Elaine May, have created a film worthy of a second screening, with a little more backing from the powers that be. I treasure that home recording I made, and will be first in line to buy it, along with all the other great films I am still waiting to be released.
Movie Review: Release this NOW on DVD Summary: 5 StarsWith a remake in the works (Elaine May is - still, I pray - involved), hopefully this comedic gem will finally get the DVD release it so deserves. One of the funniest movies I have ever seen, but also, despite its acid dry wit, genuinely touching. Like Groundhog Day, it poses the question: Is love what it seems to be, or is it sometimes fate's last resort? Neither movie diminishes love; rather, they show that it flourishes like a palm tree in the desert...or in this case, a new species of fern in the forest.
