VHS Movie Reviews of 1492 - Conquest of Paradise [VHS]

Movie Review: Scary
Summary: 1 Stars

This movie is an awful misrepresentation of the truth. Columbus was not a peace loving advocate of the "indians." He and his men were responsible for rape, death, and enslavement. Hundreds of thousands of natives died! Our history textbooks are filled with lies and dangerous films like these simply continue ignorance.

Movie Review: Exceptional!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is brilliant. It's an vision of what Columbus may have been. It isn't worth judgement. Just see it for the power of its interpretation of how fragile we humans can be.
Great Movie making.....

Movie Review: Horrible misrepresentation
Summary: 1 Stars

As a fictional tale of a man who did not historically exist, this film could potentially be a decent movie. As an attempt to portray history, however, it is a wretched failure. Not only does this film perpetuate the false heroic image of Christopher Columbus that already exists excessively, but it magnifies it. Columbus is portrayed as endlessly peaceful and sympathetic and harboring too much fascination with the "Indian" cultures to concern himself with the quest for gold. This is an outrageously false portrayal of a man who led a ruthless slavery system followed by genocide of Native American cultures. A film like this is dangerous because it is interpreted as a true account of history when, in fact, it is horribly false

Movie Review: Overly criticized Ridley Scott masterpiece!
Summary: 5 Stars

This film has recieved way to much undo criticism by lot's of people. I can't see why? Other than maybe, Depardieu's thick french accent in English sounding awful here & there, an occasional slow moving scene, what is wrong with this movie? Nothing. The acting is top notch, the visuals are amazing, the soundtrack (lot's of people always praise just the soundtrack) is awesome, and Ridley Scott shows glimpses of his brilliance that would one day be put to use in films like, Gladiator, & Black Hawk Down. The script is fantastic with structure. While Depardieu has recieved tons of heat for him being French, and his English sounding bad, he really elevates this movie with his great passionate performance (sometimes way to passionate for my tastes). Nothing is wrong with this picture, it's quite clear, and it looks good. Columbus is brought to life. What more could you ask for?

Movie Review: Should've won Oscars
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently viewed Ridley Scott's masterpiece 1492:Conquest of Paradise, and I am very proud to say I share the same Italian nationality that Columbus did, and of course new found respect for the founder of the West.
This movie was so good because it highlights the details of 15th and 16th Century life and how the Europeans made something from nothing. The politics are also highlighted in this movie, but I think it's fairly done. I'm in total agreement that the savages of those lands had to be civilized in order for there to be peace and progress in those lands, but I can understand the fear held by those tribes against the European invaders. People may disagree about if the Europeans should've stayed and conquered those lands, but nations are won and lost by war, and once Columbus set foot in the West Indies, there's no logic in thinking that the routes to the West wouldn't explode with conquerers.
Ridley Scott creates the most beautiful scenes throughout this entire movie, one of my favorite is the ceremony held for Columbus in the cathedral upon returning from his first voyage of discovery.....stunning.
The acting is fantastic. If this movie was in French, Depardieu would've easily won Best Actor. That this movie was not nominated back in 1992 is high crime.
The music of the film adds to the drama of one of the most dramatic events in the history of the world.
Everybody should see 1492 Conquest of Paradise.
