VHS Movie Reviews of 1492 - Conquest of Paradise [VHS]Movie Review: A Great Film Overlooked Summary: 5 StarsThe greatest mistake that could be made in 1492 was avoided. Columbus is not portrayed as a simple, lovable hero on a heroic quest in the land of the heathens. This alone makes for an interesting movie, but it is a masterfully crafted journey populated with well-developed characters. The screenwriter has the intelligence to stage a large part of the movie in Spain so the viewer can see the European civilization that Columbus brings with him. He comes to the New World from a land of Byzantine beauracracies, heretic burnings, constant war, and overpopulation. Columbus (despite a French accent) plays his role brilliantly. He is an educated, naturally curious man, who is charismatic and politically adept. But he is also impulsive and has a quick temper. Though he thinks differently than most Europeans, he is still a person of his times. This film has sunk into obscurity because of its lack of a simplified happy ending but it is still one of Ridley Scott's best. The cinematography, Vangelis' music, and the plot are all wonderful. I hope that one day this film will be resurrected.
Movie Review: Really great film deserves better DVD treatment than this! Summary: 5 StarsI actually own this unofficial DVD release of Ridley Scott's historical masterpiece, 1492: Conquest Of Paradise. The movie itself is a great film, with all you could ask for from any above average historical movie. Depardieu is very convincing as Columbus if you can get by him being French and all. He does a beautiful job with the part, bringing Columbus to life and it totally makes for an excellent character study, his character fascinates the viewer. The score by Vangelis is top notch, and it fits in well with the film. The music actually enhances many of the films key scenes effectiveness. It makes those scenes seem more meaningful because of Vangelis score. Now onto Ridley Scott, this is some of his best work. Now let me discuss this DVD, which was originally on the market overseas (in Korea or Hong Kong). This DVD is bad, the picture quality, why bearable to a degree, is awful and is below the quality of even laserdisc. The transfer is not nearly as bad as the audio presentation. The audio is horrible, and sounds muffled at times. If you can't wait for a possible SE release soon by Paramount, don't go with this, just wait for them to release it. Yes, this DVD is that bad. Buy the Widescreen VHS version instead.
Movie Review: Excellent film, needs to be on DVD Summary: 5 StarsWhile very different from Scott's more recent Gladiator, 1492: Conquest of Paradise is certainly worth watching. The old and the new worlds are both portrayed wonderfully. The music is perfect for the setting, as are the constumes, actors, etc. Depardieu, despite his French accent, properly represents columbus as a complex man that will pursue his goals, literally for the fifteenth century, to the end of the world. If the film could be released on DVD, it would be a true gift from the studio.
Movie Review: Unless Scott is working on a Directors Cut for the SE DVD! Summary: 5 StarsWhy no release of 1492 on DVD from Paramount? This is an excellent film, slightly flawed with historical accuracys, but very solid in all other areas, and a lifelike, almost flawless portrait of Christopher Columbus. Depardieu illustrates Columbus as a man who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. He wants to prove that Asia can be found to the west, and that the Ocean will not end with monsters guarding the edge of the world like everybody of his time believed it to be, the world is not flat, it's round, and that it also would be an easier trade route for Spain to access the likes of gold, spices, gems, pearls, produce, etc. The film acknowledges that Columbus had no clue, not at first, that he was venturing on a path where no man had ever travelled before. He was entering at least in terms of Earthly travels (not space for mankind), the final frontier. The film compares the discovery of a new world with the landing on the Moon. And it does so in a convincing, lifelike fashion. A very special movie that deserves to be dsicovered on DVD. Paramount has denied film buffs that oppurtunity so far. Hopefully that will all change, two words, release date. The films tagline is - "centurys before the exploration of space, there was another voyage into the unknown". In the theatrical trailer, a scene where Columbus (Depardieu) jumps off his boat into an alien beachshore, he walks through the saltwater with his arm out as if he wants to touch it with all his strength, he finally made it, than we see his boots, his footsteps and his footprints in the sand being weathered already by the ocean, until he stops and drops to his knees, and finally soaks in the moment. He had just changed the course of history, and mankind. One of the best filmed, most gripping scenes in movie history. At the time, in comparison, this was man landing on the moon for the first time.
Movie Review: Beautiful view from the past Summary: 5 StarsImagine returning in time to the past, being able to travel more than five hundred years ago. What was the world like? What were our ancestors like? What animals lived in the new world? The film "1492: Conquest of Paradise" directed by Ridley Scott opening in 1992 like celebration of 500 years of the discovery of the new world. Rather the encounter of two different worlds with different ways of seeing the world. It was during 1492, when Spain was united by the conquests of the Catholic kings, the Spanish language and the religion. It was the same year that Queen Isabel (Siguorney Weaver) supported Christopher Columbus (G?rad Depardieu) to travel around the world, which seemed like a trip to the space for us. He was a man who sailed with stars to the unknown. According to the film, it was in October 12, 1492 that Columbus and his men found land and natives. The film presents many scenes of the beauty in the nature. It displays the way that natives lived and as they knew the white men. One of the most important questions than the Spaniards had when Columbus returned to Spain is who are these Indians? Did God create them? What God? The questions are brought up because the Indians live naked and live paradise on earth. The film shows that the Spaniards brought horses, dogs and other animals in the am?ricas. The importance of the religion is represented by a great bell that put in a new church constructed by the Indians and the Spaniards. I recommend the film for its beauty of the nature and theme of perseverance.
